The Kruger National Park is such a lovely place to visit. My wife had an idea for an app to share animal sightings in the Kruger Park, based on the maps that are up at most of the camps, so I wrote something for the fun:

https://market.android.com/details?id=za.co.mauer.krugerspotter

Sadly  , it is going to be a while before I visit the Kruger again, so I was hoping somebody that has an Android phone/tablet might see this, who is going there sometime in the next while. I would love some feedback if this actually works. Any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Nice! Will be using it when we're in the Kruger next :D

Question: what did you use to programme the app?

Nice :)

Where do you store your data?

Maybe we should start a apps for tools written by MBB members

I use an Amazon AWS micro instance (so, free for another while) running a small Mono based server to host the sightings uploaded and for other phones to retrieve sightings they do not already have.

Awesome, I had pretty much the same idea when I was there but I didn't have signal there most of the time so gave up on that plan.

I kept that in mind. My app just remember the sightings when it does not have signal, then the next time it is opened when it has signal, it does the upload and download thing.

Thanks. I used The Android SDK (http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html) with Eclipse. It is actually a pretty small app, since it uses Google Maps etc to do most of the work.

Hand crafted. Excellent. I'm even more impressed now.

I've embarked on something similar, with regard to geotagging, and was wondering what route to follow - I've been a Netbeans fan myself, but have been using Eclipse for Android dev.

Thanks!

Yup a necessary evil when you realise that between camps you could go a day without signal!

The Kruger doesn't post rhino sitings any more, it's a quick step to remove rhino as a reported animal on the app.

Yea - I know they don't report it.

But the app would bypass the park itself and an individual would upload locations. I'd think perhaps the rhino spotting should be removed, because although the poachers themselves are poor people from the villagers, the masterminds probably have Android and can direct them.

Just a idea
