Can we have a poll about who is going to get an e-tag?

I'm not.

They can shove the tolls where the sun don't shine.

Vehicles without licence plate numbers will be flagged and the mobile National Toll Policing Unit, launched by the Transport Department in 2011, will police these occurrences. Smit said the unit will roam the entire network on a 24/7 basis and will also be positioned at on- and off-ramps to enforce toll and general road traffic rules on the route.

Fixed - glad I live in PE.

BTW our local traffic cops can't average more than one ticket a day so I wonder how these guys (and the courts) are going to police an anticipated 250,000 daily infringements.

They can bill me.

Don't get me wrong, I would gladly pay for a system where half of it doesn't go just to implement and run the tolling system itself and also one thats on the offramps and onramps. Why must I pay for a whole 10km if I just got onto the highway at the closest oframp but some other dude got on futher back and pays the same?

For me 10c with gantries at offramps/onramps would be fair.

I don't understand this e-toll gobbledygook. It is too technical for me. What is it? I don't want them to stick funny stuff on my car or tamper with it. How do I know it isn't dangerous?

:D

so something positive may come out of this, people without licence plates may have something to worry about.

+1. Going to sit back and watch the ensuing chaos

If the municipaities can't even bill correctly, how is SANRAL going to get it right. And what 3rd party databases are they using. Did I give them permission to access my info? How will they bill all the vehicles, how will they proof that it is my vehicle, how can they enforce that I pay in 7 days when SAPO takes up to 21 days for delivery? Do I have a contract with them that I will pay for services? Under what law will they prosecute me? Why are privately owned buses and taxis not paying, meaning I will pay for ther usage, while they make more money? Where the $%#$ did the admin fees come from?

If I, average citizen, has so many questions, guess how many lawyers, NGOs etc. will have when they start attempting to prosecute none payers.

Let the fun begin.

I won't pay. I am not planning to get an etag.
I will also simply take alternative routes.

I find it very interesting that motorbikes and medium vehicles don't have a rate published for "without e-tag". I have a motorbike and I am NOT sticking that thing on my bike. Does that mean motorbikes without tags are free?

I have a bad feeling that if we protest too much, and there is very high amounts of civil disobedience, government will simply mandate that any new or secondhand vehicle that is sold or changes hands in Gauteng will come with an e-tag pre-installed, and the tag will be registered along with the vehicle. :(

And who is going to stop all those motorbikes with no plates???

I assume the processing of tagless cars is offline meaning if you have a stack of false you wouldn't have to pay a cent.

Why would they go to that hassle, simple solution will be you cannot renew registration if you have outstanding tolls.

How is the number recognition going to work with the dealer plates (paper fixes to the windscreen) ?
What will happen when you buy/sell a car and there is outstanding tolls ?

So many questions still to be answered, this circus should be fun as long as you don't get caught in it.
