Who hosts the top SA websites?

It's obvious that Naspers will prefer to host it's subsidiaries' websites, makes business sense.

Yip, same for Vodacom and Microsoft... so we left with:

News24 MWEB
IOL Internet Solutions
News24 mobile MWEB
MyBroadband Hetzner
TimesLive Internet Solutions
JunkMail Internet Solutions

Why differentiate between new24 and news24 mobile? Honestly a bigger sample of websites would have made sense... with the likes of gumtree.co.za, bidorbuy.co.za etc...

Didn't have a clue what the article was on about, but the table at the end was interesting.

Nope, most of Google's IP's route to their HQ, being Mountain View, California. Where the request is routed to from there is probably based on some clever location and server load balancing algorithm. Note that some IP's could be spoofed so it's not a failsafe method, if the owner is trying to hide. The domain name was registered locally by WebAfrica for a Google subsiduary called MarkMonitor. It's seems Google is pretty secretive about the server infrastructure... read here:

It's a bit old(2008), but still interesting!

You can check the domains server location via the IP's, just CMD and ping 'google.co.za', that will give the IP, then submit the ip at www.ipaddresslocation.org to see where the IP resolves to. For local info on domain regs use whois.co.za

yeah, clearly the local mirror is merely a load balancer or something but it definitely is in SA, you can't get pings like this off anywhere in the states... from an adsl line at least.

True, must be some little DNS routing trick... where the clever guys?

That's about as close as I can get:

IP Address: 196.223.22.41
Hostname: google.cinx.net.za
IP Country: South Africa
IP Country Code: ZAF
IP Continent: Africa

Interestingly this "WorldIP" firefox plugin I use shows Cape Town for the info on that IP

Gmail it shows as US

Maybe WAJeff knows something about this?
