New Mandela banknotes announced

I think it is intrisnicly irrisponsible for any South African to idolise politicians be they local or international. It is exactly that mentality that caused so much suffering in this country. We should each find a better destiny in and among ourselves as citizens... Politicians are working for us and we should never ever let them forget it!

We should not allow them to edify themselves on our money, our streets or any other public space. Their legacy belongs in history books, biographies, documentaries and movies... not with their faces and names in our public spaces... It was wrong to do it during Apartheid and I believe it is wrong to do it today... Naming hospitals for instance after political figures is one of the most pointless and dishonorurable efforts imaginable! Unless that politican was physically involved in giving rise to it...

For instance how much did the naming of the Baragwanath Hospital after Chris Hani help that hospital to escape mismanagement and mal administration?!!?

If they really feel compelled to put faces on notes it should be of our ground breaking scientists, and artists... BUT MOST CERTAINLY NOT OF POLITICIANS!!!!

I fully agree with you, but with less breath to it.

It's a bloody waste of time and money to do this. People are unemployed and without homes, so spend the money where it is needed, not on nonsensical trash.

Some people will bow down or stand on attention for this gods. It will also be a collectors item.

I think it's dumb. Really. In know Mandela is seems as the ultimate freedom fighter but to put his face on all of the notes??!?!

If you MUST change the notes to feature politicians then surely they can add a bit of diversity.

While I appreciate what Madiba has done for this country, I believe that there were others also invloved in the struggle and not just him. He was the face of the struggle. I would still like the Big FIVE to be represented on the notes as this is the true reflection of what South Africa is, not polictical figures. Also leave Madiba in peace, he is still remembered in our hearts.

They are still there... on the backside... But I am completely against the edification of politicians... ESPECIALLY if they are still alive... this is a troublesome president that has been created!

President... precedent. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela... Rolihlahla = 'troublemaker'

Whether intentional or not... :D

Agreed with Antowan.

Besides, what is wrong with the current set we have?

Also, what security measures will the new notes have to prevent massive forgery?

while I do think mandela is a great man, I do not think this is the right way to go about preserving his legacy and only furthers the divisions within our country. I would have preferred the notes to remain, and if they must, then maybe create a R500 note with him on it. It is not very appealing when you have the same image on all the notes, seems rather bland and lacking imagination
