E-toll offenders to be prosecuted

So I refuse to buy an e-tag, I drive under a gantry, and I get issued a "fine" through the AARTO system. Great. That fine is likely going to take 2 months to get to me (by snail mail) and will likely be illegal anyway. Since I'm not allowed to use the Toll Road until I've paid for my previous usage, what will they do to stop me from riding underneath that gantry the following day, and the day after that, and the day after that?

Also, since when is NOT being registered for e-tolling and not having an e-tag a criminal offence? There is absolutely NOTHING forcing us to register and get e-tags. It is not law.

This is all a load of bullsh*t...

I want to see how they pull this off. I mean it's not like our courts aren't backlogged as it is

I didn't read anything about e-tag registrations in the article

I was expecting this! There were bound to be some announcements about "enforcement" and "criminal prosecution".
Of course it is all designed to scare the public into paying up like good little sheep.
The problem for them though remains massive public non-participation.
And that is what is going to take the Golden Goose of theirs and drive a street lamp right through it's little heart.

lol... one month to go to the start of the e-tolling system... and they have only sold 300,000 e-tag devices! :D There are over 3.3 million cars in Gauteng. That's less than 10% of the vehicles population. How are they gonna sell 3 million e-tags in one month? :D

I thought you just get billed the normal full rate if you dont have a e-tag and to do that they have to send you invoices and stuff. Now it is sommer illegal to not have a e-tag? Am I understanding it wrong?

Besides...I have often driven to work and noticed that the traffic towards Joburg is chock and block with traffic and almost standing still. Why the f should those people pay tolls if there is hardly a improvement? I thought they want us to pay tolls to fly at full speed limit on the highways...and this for sure aint happening! Even on the N3 on my way to work...it is still pretty damn slow from about the Marlboro section all the way to the airport offramp. Again...improvement? What improvement? Or am I just imagining it?

someone should go to this guys house and show him what an actual criminal act is and burn it down!

i heard they were gonna bring these 'special' cops... "pay your fine or we breaka your legs, capiche!"
anyways, seems to be coming... they dont really need to catch you... if you have outstanding unpaid tolls, you simply won't be able to renew your car's license, then you can be really screwed.... just a matter of time before you hit a roadblock, and the bus will be waiting.
bastards really looking to grab us by the short n curlies :-(

So renew it at your post office within the next month. :)

“We’ll catch those we catch. In South Africa lots of things happen and not all criminals are caught, but those we can, we’ll catch,” he said.

So that is kind of admitting that they cannot handle the masses ignoring them.
