DStv installations are in decline say installers

So is this the real reason Multichoice decided to pre-empt everyone into upgrading to bigger dishes?

I guess people are tired of being ripped off... I am not sure if I can survive without Dstv... I'm an avid sport supporter and DSTV offers me a whole host of important sport that I follow... I wish DSTV had more COMPETITION!!!

Internet + Downloads = Old systems die. The king is dead. Hail to the king!

It’s worth noting that in the latest interim financial results posted by Naspers for the six-months ended in September 2011, MultiChoice showed subscriber growth decline for the third 6-month period in a row.

pfffft...

Hopefully Multichoice will eventually realise that in this country price is going to become absolute king in terms of whether someone gets a product or not... and the days of ripping the arse out of it are going to come to an end.

1 thing that we all need to be aware of though in terms of the "download is the new future" thing, currently it still relies on people have satellite/cable tv to be able to "grab" the show from.. and if these models die then so does the download world as we know it right now.

Well almost every house in our area has a DStv dish, so obviously new installations are going to decrease. 43 houses in our street, 40 have a DStv dish.

My subscription was cancelled a number of months back already, but my dish is still attached. I'm too lazy to do something about it :D

So maybe going by whether a dish is attached to a house isn't that accurate

The spike in the Half Year ending Sep 2010 is probably due to the Soccer World Cup. So the average is possibly skewed by this.

Also, this is new installations. What about cancellations? This would be interesting to see.

Next year there will be less people on the system. I know a lot of people that will cancel after the super rugby.
Bring it down to R300 and you will double your consumers is 1 years time.

I will MORE than likely be cancelling after the superrugby/olympics this year... its R600+ i could do with somewhere else...

As old-school media/TV wise-up to the fact that most of it's going online, they'll start releasing more and more of their shows online. Almost all that I watch can be streamed online LEGALLY and doesn't require someone with a satellite/cable grabbing it and torrenting it anymore. South Park was one of the pioneers of this when they decided to release full episodes almost right after it aired for the first time. You don't see them complaining about profits declining nor do you see them cancelled because of it.

So even though it's slow, everything is slowly moving towards the online spectrum. It's almost the norm in Europe now to get your internet and television from the same company (all delivered via the same connection). I reckon in another 10 years or so (if not sooner), it will become more and more clear to big companies to shift that way as well. Not necessarily away from TV and old school broadcasting, but towards embracing the "online". Shows like SGU for example has a huge online following, but just because the old-school broadcasting "ratings" weren't there, they cancelled it. Something that could have been very profitable for them.

This could also be due, other than all the rip-off comments, to a slowing in the growth of the middle class.

monochoice can go rot. in my circle alone I know of 4 people who have killed their contract and 2 who are lowering the sub to compact (fail)

I will never again pay money to monochoice. greedy bastards, the lot of 'em

If I didn't have kids living in the house I would have cancelled - only because of the exorbitant price.

I tried to watch a move on Saturday night and couldn't find anything worth watching...

I agree with the above statements. There is just not enough choice on DSTV in my opinion. Yes sure they cover a wide variety of sports but in all honesty they dont cover the sports I actually want to watch.

Being an avid racing/motorsports fan they just do not give us enough options. There is barely any motocross/supercross which i have to stream live online or hopefully find a download to watch. How often do they show nascar/indy car racing? Their is never any British superbike racing, hardly get to see any touring car racing. The world superbikes and MotoGP they are pretty good with but in all honesty i would rather just download them or stream them as i already stream most of my racing through eurosport anyway. If they can offer me eurosport and eurosport2 as well as speed then i would honestly take a subscription again.
