8ta 3G issues north riding?

Hi all,

I've recently signed up for 8ta 3G (internet 5 promo) - mostly because I visited a friend who was using it and it worked great at his place. Now since I've gotten it I've been having some latency and speed issues, though strangely enough, my 3G router shows almost full signal:

I've logged a call with 8ta and a technician has been here, but he spent about 5 minutes here, muttered something about the tower and went off.

I wondered if anyone knew of any specific settings I could try on my router (huawei B683) - or anything really to improve my speed/latency? I know mine isn't that bad in comparison with other people that I've read about on this forum, but I do believe it could be, and should be better. These tests were all done within minutes of each other.

Strangely, it does seem a bit better, earlier during the day I could barely get speedtest to load. Still - if anyone can offer any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

What I see on the picture is 4 bars, not a full signal. You get better speeds (particularly when congestion increases) if you work on your signal. Find the best location for router. More accurate reading gives device reporting RSSI, by example laptop with 3G modem and monitoring tool like MDMA.

Thank you - could you provide a link to MDMA? (when I google it, I just get links to drugs)

You seem lost connection (see QoS) and registration (see RAT) before screen shot was made. Your RSSI is no longer valid too. Modem is currently searching for network. Beta version would show if you are registered to the network. Try to change modem orientation to pickup better signal, or even different CellID with similar RSSI and test speed when connected to a new tower. If using USB extension, it must be very short. With 95dBm don't expect miracles, but should be better than EDGE and it shoudn't lose connection.

If you can afford it, external antenna usually helps, but if tower is unstable, it won't. Find it out before making decision.

Cool - just for reference - would CellID be the tower I'm connecting to?

Yip, It identifies tower. The last digit difference should be the same tower, but different sector antenna.

Yeah - looks like my signal is a bit wonky. Can anyone suggest a good antenna to fit my B683? I'm not too clued up on 3G tech :)

It's not your antenna the throughput in northriding is just bad, 8ta must seriously sort out the bandwidth on these towers.

Jip blandford rd, this morning mybb was timing out but now I'm getting 300KB

I'm in bellairs - so I'm pretty sure we're on the same tower, speedtest and mybb also time out for me quite a lot. I also get a lot of DNS errors.

Have you logged any calls or complaints?

I'm on Bellairs too ... I had been using 8ta for about 8 months or so and the first 6/7 were great (2-3mbps). However the last 1/2 months have been a consistent 0.7mps with high pings too. And it was a different Cell ID too :/

Gave it to my brother when they installed ADSL a week ago

Damn - hoped more people in my area would complain so 8ta would take more interest in the problem :)

I have ;)

I received a reply from host social@8ta address to say they're looking into it - but nothing more

This is what frustrates me the most:

CellC sim that I have in my tablet:

I have seen speedtests in the speedtest sticky that get to similar speeds and pings, I just hope 8ta can fix it ASAP.

Update - looks like it's just getting worse:

Tonight I'm getting 3-4 Mbps on speedtest.net and sub 100 ping to www.mybroadband.co.za but web very slow forum times out half the time.

It's early now so my speeds are ok-ish, but from 8 onwards, it's terrible. Also - yesterday I was getting so many DNS timeouts I wanted to throw my laptop off the second floor, I switched my DNS provider to google (8.8.8.8) and it's MUCH better.

Early morning speedtests:

That was the only two I could get done, the other just either timed out or didn't start :(

My pings are still as bad as ever:

8ta are sending a technician to my house for a second time now - let's see if it makes a difference.

I'll try the google DNS tonight hopefully that helps a bit. Do you know where the towers are around northriding? Im a bit further up blandford rd near ascot rd
