Good morning.

I looked around and didn't find any relevant threads regarding the trial phase of the R397 Afrihost account.

Who has signed up for it? What are your thoughts?

I decided to give it a go and activated it last week Thursday. I have used a substantial amount of data over the weekend without any signs of a slowdown.

My Latency has been good for an uncapped account - typically 8ms to a CPT BF3 server, and between 35 and 45 to a JHB server. Speedtest provides a 10ms ping to local speedtest servers and my download speed is in the region of 4-5mbps. Upload speed is good with no visible throttling - 0.7-0.8mbps.

I don't download during the day (Mon - Fri) and only really use the uncapped for downloading from 11pm to 6am.

During this download period, according to their bandwidth monitor I downloaded 11.35gb. When on Web Africa if I managed 8gb, that was alot!

I will continue to provide feedback until the 25th. Anyone else using these accounts? What are your thoughts?

I have signed up for it (since thursday evening).
My total so far is 34GB. Have seen no slowdown at all. My only issue was a hiccup with SMTP but I think that was an IS problem.
Very happy.

I've signed up to it. Torrents seem to be heavily throttled, can't get over 45 KB/s with any torrent.

Cant connect this morning hopefully it will get sorted quick.
As far as the account I am happy, done about 7 gb torrents going full speed no buffering on youtube. :)

I will stay away from Afrihost uncapped for a long time before I think about going back.

I see this account is still on the IS backbone, so how are they not doing the whole Top % of users get shaped to death?

As far as I know, and I may be wrong, but I think Afrihost runs their own uncapped product on the IS network. I don't think they resell the IS product. Remember, they are probably one of the biggest resellers of IS. I am sure they will be getting some good deals.

Maybe this has changed then, but I remember being on Afrihost uncapped not too long ago and I wasn't too happy. Kept getting shaped even for ridiculously low usage.

Correct. I heard from a reliable source that the 4mb uncapped accounts are good for 120gb before any shaping or throttling kicks in.

Even 120 doesn't seem that good tbh... I never had a problem with being shaped, but having my line speed throttled from downloading will irritate me... I also had some terrible latency issues last night, but i think it may have had something to do with the rosebank issues (downloads were fine however. did 12gb between midnight at 7... :wtf:) . I will see tonight.

Look, it all depends how heavy the shaping will be at 120gb and above but I agree, it's an underwhelming total if you look at it in isolation. But considering the accounts retail for R397, that's R3.31 per gb and still very good value for money.

Good point. I have always liked Afrihost, mainly because of their pioneering offer (R29/gb) and 2/3 for ones offered later on... the only thing that really bothered me was that I got an increase in latency when playing on local (in my area) servers. CPT had a higher ping than Jhb, hence, my lowest achievable ping in online fps was between 30 and 50, whereas with Telkom, Mweb and Web Africa, I got sub 20ms pings to CT servers. IS has now fixed this by dropping off a PoP in CPT, so no complaints wrt that anymore!

I hope the account doesn't get severely throttled, because then I will definitely be staying with them.. R397 is a great price for 4mbps uncapped, and I hope it keeps going down!

Spyk3r, appreciate the feedback. :)

Do you or anyone else know if you can get upto 10MB with these accounts as stated by iS that it will be at no extra cost? If so then this is the best package out (except what happens after 120GB we are yet to see..).

If i can get 900GB per month then i can atleast consider this :).

No, you won't get 10mbps.
I saw line speed (6mbps) when I first connected up, but after 5mb or so it was throttled to 4mbps.
I'm currently on 44GB since thursday. Should hit 120 soon enough.
