Interesting that Microsoft went the own device route. Wonder how the OEM's sees this move...Guess time will tell.

I like the pro version as it enables (side loading) only concern would be battery life. Must admit I really dig the keyboard in the cover option.

For the Arm version all is going to depend on price.
With very little apps it will have to be a lot cheaper than the iPad.

WRT to the Pro version I'd rather get a new thin Ivy Bridge Notebook as it will have the exact same OS.

Microsoft unveiled its own range of tablet PCs at an event in Hollywood today (19 June 2012) set to run on its upcoming Windows 8 operating system

When this article was published it was not even 19 June yet anywhere in the US. It was hardly 19 June here and in Los Angeles its 21:30 18 June still as I post this. Someone care to explain?

It's a typo.

I watched the event live on 3 different feeds.

As a former MSFTer I am astonished that they'll actually compete with Win OEMs, on both ARM and x86. That's by far the bigger news, in my view. We'll have to see how the OEMs react. In a way they have little choice because so far every Android-based iPad-killer has flopped badly.

I can understand the reason for MSFT doing this: set the bar for what the Win8 experience can be, pushing IHV's to step up their engineering. With Win8 there's just too much at stake for MSFT to leave its fate in the hands of cost-pressured IHVs.

Now that it's been announced it makes a helluva lot more sense than it did before. My thinking has to be updated.

Windows on a tablet, definitely will be watching this space, for work the best OS on a tablet would be Windows.

It comes with its own keyboard and has the bundled office software. So this is more like a NetBook killer.

Nokia must be looking pretty stupid by betting their company on Windows only that is unless they're waiting for a takeover from MS.

Looks sweet! Do want that! :D

The Win 8 Pro version looks like the better option. More applications etc.

DO WANT to replace my stupid iPad so this better be good :)

I'll wait for some hands-on reviews before I get excited, another case of Microsoft walking in the footsteps of giants.

Im interested ..... would love to see how this performs against the iPad and an android tab ... wonder
if this can be used as a mobile gaming device if it comes with a Quad core

Having both ARM and intel versions of a tablet with the same name is going to create a lot of confusion though, not a good idea.

It was the 18th of June in the US at the time the announcement was made, but it was most definitely the 19th here - the article was up at around 2am local time; so really, it's accurate/inaccurate depending on which side of the world you prefer to see time from. We chose local.
