Windows 8 computers to go on sale in October

I'm shopping for a PC now. Went to Hi-fi Corp and there are stickers that say R125 to upgrade to Win8 until 31 Jan 2013. The PCs come with Win7 already installed.

It would be unwise not to upgrade. Me thinks.

Further, there is another upgrade incentive. If you are running the Beta version, an upgrade will cost just US$40. Don't know how much that will convert to in Rands - R320? Since you would pay via credit card via the MS States side website, I assume.

These upgrade options are both promotional and valid till 31 Jan.

Brand new Win8 packages after 31 Jan would proly cost +R1,000 for the most basic one. Even more if the OS is a runaway hit. Flipside would be, the promo runs beyond 31 Jan and becomes the going price but you would be taking a chance IMO.

New versions of Windows typically come out every three years, but this update is the most widely anticipated overhaul of the software since 1995.

Really? If anything, it's the least most anticipated because people are actually content with a rock solid Windows 7 IMO.

Hell, people were happy to use Windows XP for 11 years (and a lot still do!) and Windows 7 hasn't even made it to service pack 2. Now all of sudden there's this rush to upgrade....but to what? A few tiles on the desktop, but other things that Microsoft is quietly removing in the background. Like the Media Centre.

I'll give Windows 8 a try on the new Surface tablet, when it gets released in South Africa. ;)

I've been using the CP since March. This is what my start menu currently looks like:

Wow, that is going to take some getting used to. I can see the sense of using it with Surface on a tablet...But on a desktop or a lappie...Meh.

Fixed :D - at least that's what it seems the guys at ZDNet think, from my testing I'm inclined to agree.

Anyone else remember the days when you could legally install WinXP SP3 on a pre-installed Vista systems license?

They didn't do away with media centre, the Windows 8 IS the media centre. The only reason they had Media Centre was because the Windows UI is not really TV friendly. Metro is both touch and TV friendly. It also caters for the media centre extenders natively (i.e. consoles or any streaming device).

One of the many reasons it's not "just a few tiles on the desktop". ;)

I must be honest I've been running it for a while now and it is rock solid!

Goodness me, that looks absolutely horrible!

I would be so sad if I can't see my cool wallpaper anymore. :(

I prefer this.....

I've used the Beta and CP versions since they came out - Win8 is very stable and quite a bit faster than Win7 - boot is extremely quick, and once you get used to press Win and type the first three letters of the app you want to open (almost like launchy) it's a great time saver. All my applications work perfectly on win8 and there are a lot of improvements over win7.

I'd say that Win 8 is definitely worth the upgrade - as an Action Pack subscriber, I can't wait for my dvd's to arrive!

I am not looking forward to it - I think it will be the biggest flop since Vista! Problem is, I work retail in a PC shop and this will conflict with my ethics. I really hope they keep Win 7 around like what they did with XP. Knowing Micro$oft, probably not.

Then again, I only tried the Dev version - so maybe I have been a bit hasty in my decision. I shall see if the Micro$oft reps can convince me of it...
