SMS pricing change for South Africa looming?

Just more proof that Vodacom and MTN were operating a cartel all these years - and screwing the South African public.

And CellC. They were part of it too. Just because AKC decided to screw -er- his own agreement over, doesn't vindicate him. He shouldn't have made this agreement 10 years ago. Also, there's obviously some back-handed tactics going on with only one WASP getting the return path. Probably some AKC's Christmas bonus.
 
Vodacom will probably start blocking SMS's coming from the WASPs via other providers (such as Cell C) - just like they've already done for USSD.

I hope that the SMS prices stay the same or go down, because they're already so incredibly high for what they offer.

If one is not allowed to block cell phone calls then wouldn't the same apply to SMS?

As to price I see no need for SMS prices to go up, the pie just needs to be carved up differently and that will be between the cell phone networks. I don't see why this should have anything to do with consumers.
 
Where is the Competition Commission when you need them?
Sounds like, tastes like, feels like, smells like price fixing.
Someone please bring this to the attention of the Commission.
I understand their fines are 20% of income.
I'm sure a the treasury could do with the windfall fine.
 
This for me would constitute clear evidence of Price Fixing on behalf of the mobile operators.

So, because Cell C decides not to play nice with the other kids, some WASPs or networks (not clear from the article) think their best response is to acknowledge they are complicit in a crime??!! Corporate governance at its very finest.
 
Gentleman's agreement = price fixing

All those involved must be investigated and fined by the Competition Commission!

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Sure, introduce a network termination charge for SMS's. About 0.1c per message sounds right. And the charge for messages on net should be another 0.1c, giving a total of 0.2c to the consumer.
I think 5 SMS's for 1 cent is quite a reasonable price if you look at how little of the network resources they take up.
