Article says that its a MTN failure?

So how come my Axxess account is flying in Cape Town, but all the Afrihost guys are battling... I mean, both Axxess and Afrihost witched over from IS to MTN.

Makes no sense

Good question.. what's your username and password? I'd like to try your account and see the difference ;)

Most probably because they separate the "pool" somehow and it just so happens the Afrihost pool fell over.

But this is typical from MTN's network. I told EVERYONE here (and been blasted for it) that Afrihost moving to MTN will give endless issues because MTN is incapable of running a DC and/or ISP services.

Case and point, no redundancy. Much like their DC's almost yearly failure. I wouldn't touch MTN with someone else's stick nevermind my own.

I'm sure AH said before that they still manage their customers separately. So I guess AH is shaping the crap out of you, while Axxess is a bit more relaxed.

What IP address do you get on the axxess network?

Normal browsing, streaming etc on axxess is OK, it's the downloading that's a problem. Since the weekend my download speeds on axxess are virtually zero, I should add that I've done about 200GB on my 2Mb uncapped this month though (which was never a problem on the IS backbone).

I think 850KB/sec on a 10mb line in the middle of the day is quite fine

Axxess uncapped - Cape Town

How many gigs have you downloaded this month? In the Afrihost threads they're saying that 45GB is considered excessive on 1Mb uncapped with 200GB being the upper limit on the faster accounts.

380GB on a 5Mbps ADSL line(sync speed) & 5Mbps Uncapped account so far this month. Most of it NZB's :D

Although we both run on MTN now, Axxess and Afrihost each have our own separate management systems. However, the experience should be largely similar, depending on whether there is demand more or less demand for bandwidth on their network or ours.

We don't throttle (which some people are referring to incorrectly as shaping) based on thresholds anymore (and neither does Axxess to my knowledge). We use complex calculations factoring in usage trends, services used, projected usage measured alongside available capacity, and that affects ONLY P2P downloads.

So NNTP is not shaped since it is not peer to peer?

Afriman I'm sorry but that last part can't be true. I've seen nntp and normal downloads also crawl during business hours. On the other thread there are lots of examples of speedtests also going at 10% of line speed.

Is axxess' problem with the backbone or have they started shaping us more?

If downloads are slow, that could be normal. But speedtest and browsing should be at full speed (or as close as the network can allow) at all times. If that is the case, it's something our support team should be looking into.

Well it is shaped, though I suppose one could argue that it is not P2P. The issue is the amount of bandwidth on the network being used by that service/protocol and the degree to which it negatively affects other priority services.

I fixed it for you. ;)

Speedtest done right now.
Download :: 929 Kbps 116 kB/s Upload :: 301 Kbps 38 kB/s

It is actually one of the better ones I've had recently during the day.
The problem is that this drops down to 50KB/s almost every evening at some point.

Edit to add. This is on a 2mb account.
