Hi

I thought it was illegal to network lock a cell phone. I purchased 2 Nokia X2-02 Cell Phones on the weekend. Swapped the sim card and see it's network locked!

Please could you assist with my rights.

Thanks

Havent asked yet... wanted advice here first.

So you haven't spoken to the shop owner or the SP yet but you want advice? First see if they willing to help you.

Im ready to perform sexual favours to the person who can tell me how to unlock a E353Wu-1 modem bought in the UK. Because according to "the internet" it cannot be unlocked.

There is nothing I have not tried.

Sure you're not confusing "locked" with "branding"?

I've got a cheapie Samsung running on 8ta which still initially displays the MTN logo when you switch it on.

Im sure - it asks for a restriction code when i switch it on :)

Spoke to them - they say it's network locked and I must pay to have it unblocked.

MTN - It's a dual sim phone. It has the promary sim under the battery and the secondary sim on the side of the phone. You can put anything in the side sim slot but as soon as you put anything but MTN in the primary sim slot it locks and asks for a restriction code.

I tried - X2-02 is not listed... now we just need to find out if it's legal. According to the dumb MTN call centre, it costs R500 to unlock!

Oh, and spoke to Ackermans where I bought it... they pretty clueless :)

So why don't you just use the other slot then?

Cause he might want to use a Cell C with 8ta SIM, and not be forced into using MTN.

This could be a test case in SA for all those forumites who alway write it's illegal to sell network locked phones in SA.
Please let us know how you resolve this, Aharon, if you in fact can.

100% - I wanted to use 8ta and Vodacom...

I'll keep this thread updated with any / all news as it materialises.

Any additional info / advice always appreciated

You could try contacting ICASA and find out if the draft regulations published in gazette no 32803 were adopted. If it was then network locking is illegal, if it wasn't they are still allowed to do it.

from here:
Q Why will my phone only work with an MTN SIM card?
A An MTN phone will only work with an MTN SIM card because some phones are Network locked for the duration of the 24-month contract period. Once your contract is complete the phone can be unlocked free of charge. If you want to unlock the phone whilst you are still in contract, you can have this done for a fee of R570. All phones bought on Pay as you Go are charged a R570 unblocking fee.
