Torrents were performing terribly for more than 2 weeks, and i decided i would use NZB's.

I must admit this is real mission to get going. I ended up registering at more than 5 sites where NZB files are hosted. On all i couldnt download 1 file.

Lets no go into how many where there wasnt even the option to register - especially the local sites.

There are a lot of smug NZB users on this forum, going on about how great they are, and how anybody who doesnt use the same must be crazy. But for the average guy, its not easy, and usually comes with an additional cost, never mind the ass kissing needed to get an account where NZB files are hosted.

Torrents work much simpler, and probably why its more popular.

What are nzbs? :D

No but seriously, once you have gone through the pain of learning how everything works and you have done the initial set up, everything from that point is just pure bliss.

Let me start by saying, you are an idiot if you think it is not that easy. I say this with the utmost respect, because I have friends who I told about it, and they got started with much more advanced setups, without me helping them at all, ala sickbeard+couchpotato ect.

With that out of the way:

Getting started shouldn't cost you a cent.

1. Register at these for free:
- nzb-matrix.eu
- nzbplanet.net

2. get a nzb client, best is to get latest version of sabnzbd, however if that doesn't suit your fancy, and you are into having a nice gui but world of pain with broken downloads, go for grabit or altbinz

3. Use the server supplied by your ISP, either news.is.co.za news.saix.net news.afrihost.co.za ect

4. Only if you see the light, you will know it is worth it to spend a small monthly fee on a better news server like tweaknews.

There you go. And all that you could find by using google and this forums' search feature.

If you reach the point where you want/need to spend money, rather go with a torrent download service. Easier and you download http. You wait like 5 min to 0 min (cached) for movie to download, then get a http link.

Edit: and you don't have to jump through hoops to get torrent/magnet links

Like a cult is exactly right. The users/cult members will pile massive hate on you if you express anything but absolute adoration for their clunky 1970's tech and prefer something that works easier, faster and actually has what you're looking for. Kind of like Linux users I guess.

Usenet is not that difficult. I think the majority of the problem lies with the fact that people are too lazy to learn anything new and a major adversity to reading in any way or form.

A point has been reached where through technology people got are so used to the comfort of pointing, clicking, grabbing and consuming that the mere thought of something that requires the least amount of effort scares the crap out of them - so they either avoid it or moan about it (or both). With the rise of SABnzbd, Couch Potato, Sickbeard, Headphones et al. it has never been easier to get hold of more content than you can throw a dead cat at.

There is a lot of material, freely available through via basic Google search, that will take you through the basics in a step-by-step easy to follow manner. If you really want assistance with getting into Usenet you are welcome to PM me and I will gladly point you in the right direction on how to set yourself up - or just stay away from 'the cult'. But stop moaning and begrudging other Usenet users because you cannot get it to work.

I've tried to test out nzbs as well and it's just not worth the hassle. Torrents just work. No need to downloads par files for corrupted downloads either. On the super rare occasion that something does corrupt I can just right-click "hash check".

Much easier by far.

lol indeed.

It is actually not funny though, it is really sad that people are so useless, that they can't figure out the most basic things in life for themselves, they actually need someone to hold their hand and do the work for them. Either they are super smart and lazy, or just plain stupid.

Or we just don't feel the need to back up the internet. I find a series I like and download it season by season. No need to make sure my line 100% utilized all the time.

Its pure laziness.

Just over two years ago I had no idea how downloading from newsgroups worked - now my entire process is automated, I don't spend hours each week looking for torrents to download, hoping they're seeded, etc.

If I want something, I put the name into Sick Beard, Coach Potato, etc...and it does all the work for me.

 So using newsgroups is now downloading the internet?

RSS feeds can do that too.

I use news server and only download what I need. I like that all my new linux distros just show up magically in xbmc the next morning :)

Bit of a wild assumption.

My line is far from 100% utilized all of the time. My household actually consumes whatever is grabbed. My Usenet traffic pretty consistently hovers around the 200-250 GB per month, mark (only HD content) - I think this is a reasonable amount of traffic and far from 'backing up the internet'.

I'm now at a point where I only spend 15 minutes a month adding new content to SB,CP etc. The fact that I do not have to trawl for stuff consistently makes life so easy.

When I hear about a new series/movie/documentary that I might like (during casual conversation or an ad on TV) all I have to do is fire up my SB,CP from any of my mobile devices wherever I am at the time and ad it. As soon as it is available it will get grabbed, tagged and sorted. All I need to do is fire up my TV when I get home. Hell I even have my notifications sent to me via Notify my Android and Twitter accounts as soon as the downloads are completed and ready.

Call it 'clunky' and 'old' as much as you like - it works for me and many others. If it aint broke...

let me add my 2c here...

i really dont see the need to switch over to nzb to be honest, torrents work fine and with my current isp (uncapped) i almost always get line speed even during the day and when its not line speed its still always above 50% (of the line speed)

TPB always have what i need and if you download from the trusted sources (pink, green and blue skulls) you have no problems

Bottom line: theres still a HUGE place for torrents in the world of nzb and i wouldn't switch over just yet

+10 - with a minor edit: "because you [are lazy so] cannot get it to work"

Um, all you super geniuses know that Sick Beard and Couchpotato work with Usenet and torrents, right? It's not actually the Usenet bit you're all raving about, it's the apps that automate it.
