Using NZB's - like having to join a cult

let me add my 2c here...

i really dont see the need to switch over to nzb to be honest, torrents work fine and with my current isp (uncapped) i almost always get line speed even during the day and when its not line speed its still always above 50% (of the line speed)

TPB always have what i need and if you download from the trusted sources (pink, green and blue skulls) you have no problems

Bottom line: theres still a HUGE place for torrents in the world of nzb and i wouldn't switch over just yet

This is it, it's a personal preference. If you don't like the news server route then use torrents. It's just sometimes very annoying when other people bash the use of news servers without having the slightest clue of how it works. The thing is that most nzb users know how to use torrents but very rarely the other way around.

I downloaded sick beard last night, followed newshost.za instructions and added them as a content provider but for the life of me I don't know how to automate my stuff :(

So how are the NZB guys enjoying their DMCA take down requests.

I've been aware of it yes. The ratio's, peering etc. are a few of the things that have kept me from torrents. In the early days when uncapped was only a myth - the fact that I had to upload and download and put additional pressure on my bandwidth was the main reason I looked into Usenet to begin with.

To each his own I say.

This thread was started on the premise that the torrent speeds sucked and that Usenet appeared to be a viable alternative. I can in all honestly state that I have never had speed issues on Usenet (unless my ADSL line had issues). This reason alone, is also one of the main reasons "the cult" has such a strong following. Speed.

Seems to back to normal the last few weeks. Prior to that during the time when nzbmatrix shut its door it was quite bad - there shouldn't really have been a correlation between these but I think it just took some time for the gaping hole that nzbmatrix left to fill up again.

Yup - the last days of NZBM were not a happy time but recently haven't had a single failed dl.

As for NZB being a cult I found the temporary switch to torrents was equally cultish.

Piles of pms saying your ratio was too low blah blah blah, special offers to beat the ratios etc.

Now I'm using nzbs again together with free torrent sites.

NewzTown is becoming a really nice site but for old and rarer stuff I haven't found a match for the now deceased nzbmatrix.

lol indeed.

It is actually not funny though, it is really sad that people are so useless, that they can't figure out the most basic things in life for themselves, they actually need someone to hold their hand and do the work for them. Either they are super smart and lazy, or just plain stupid.

Or we just don't feel the need to back up the internet. I find a series I like and download it season by season. No need to make sure my line 100% utilized all the time.
Way to go to take my post which you quoted completely out of context.
And no I don't need to download the internet either.

I find it to not be a problem at all.

Um, all you super geniuses know that Sick Beard and Couchpotato work with Usenet and torrents, right? It's not actually the Usenet bit you're all raving about, it's the apps that automate it.
True sickbeard can do torrents, but then again it is not as smooth and fast as usenet, but I guess that doesn't matter to some, I however prefer to keep my upload speed clean from torrents.

My couchpotato sadly doesn't do torrents, haven't seen the need to upgrade to v2 yet.

To be honest, the DMCA's were a minor irritation around the time Matrix shut their doors. But I have managed to fill those missing gaps a few weeks later. As it stands now I can honestly say I have had very few issues relating to DMCA requests.

I use NZBs because they are usually a whole lot faster than torrents for me. It has nothing to do with a cult.

I can't remember the last time I queued up ~10GB in the evening and it wasn't done in the morning. Can't say the same about torrents.

Let me start by saying, you are an idiot if you think it is not that easy. I say this with the utmost respect, because I have friends who I told about it, and they got started with much more advanced setups, without me helping them at all, ala sickbeard+couchpotato ect.

With that out of the way:

Getting started shouldn't cost you a cent.

1. Register at these for free:
- nzb-matrix.eu
- nzbplanet.net

2. get a nzb client, best is to get latest version of sabnzbd, however if that doesn't suit your fancy, and you are into having a nice gui but world of pain with broken downloads, go for grabit or altbinz

3. Use the server supplied by your ISP, either news.is.co.za news.saix.net news.afrihost.co.za ect

4. Only if you see the light, you will know it is worth it to spend a small monthly fee on a better news server like tweaknews.

There you go. And all that you could find by using google and this forums' search feature.

Is it possible to integrate nzbplanet.net with sabnzbd? If so, how because the website is not really helping.

Look on the leftthand menu there you will find rss feeds.

Go into sabnzbd, add the feed to your rss feeds.
Click on the rss feed in sabnzbd and setup which entries you want to download

If you reach the point where you want/need to spend money, rather go with a torrent download service. Easier and you download http. You wait like 5 min to 0 min (cached) for movie to download, then get a http link.

Edit: and you don't have to jump through hoops to get torrent/magnet links

details??

details??

Services like DownStorm and put.io. I have accounts with both but I still find the nzb route better for my purposes. I find put.io quite useful if I want to stream random stuff, but sitting with 4meg line I can only really get mediocre 720p streams to play smoothly. I am however using it quite a bit now while I have no disk space available.

Like a cult is exactly right. The users/cult members will pile massive hate on you if you express anything but absolute adoration for their clunky 1970's tech and prefer something that works easier, faster and actually has what you're looking for. Kind of like Linux users I guess.

Easier than SB/CP... don't think so.

Faster? Nope, torrents are definitely not faster than Usenet :p

It's not actually the Usenet bit you're all raving about, it's the apps that automate it.

Torrents don't really work as well as Usenet on Couch Potato... see here

Usenet = Speed. Security. No Letters. No Seeders. No Ratio's. No Uploading. Automation.
