Very aggressive 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL data prices emerge

I was very impressed when I saw these prices, especially with data rollover. This is really putting the cat among the pigeons in the fixed broadband space...
 
Will these accounts work on 4mbit ADSL lines? Reason being I`m so tired of Telkom uncapped not working 100% so might as well buy 100GB unshaped bundle monthly.
 
100gigs for R490 - I'll be surprised if Afrihost does not come out with similar.

We have a 72gig one for R490 iirc, and this month they had their 'gift promo' and gave us 26gigs extra.
 
I have to admit, I find it really difficult to feel like this is progress. I definitely don't miss the way broadband and telecoms work in South Africa when for the equivalent of R500 I get a 200Mbps cable connection without any of this "capped," "shaping" or "throttling" nonsense.

I don't think it'll be long before 100GBs is seen as archaic as the 3GB caps Telkom originally pushed on us. On my old 4Mbps line I used to do around 160GB per month. On a 200Mbps line, I'm downloading 15GBs in ten minutes; how long do you think 100GB would last? Especially when things like Netflix, Hulu, etc are available?

I guess it's baby steps and progress is still progress but I can't help feeling that Telkom and ICASA will always keep South Africa far behind the rest of the world...
 
I think that besides the pricing, the ROLLOVER is the selling factor here,10 months rollover has never been heard off in the ADSL sector and this will hopefully follow with other providers aswell. I know many users have asked for rollover from as far back as 10 years ago :).

Well done to VOX and there should be NO reason that these packages cannot be used with the lower speed profiles however i do hope they release official info to confirm.

It will be a slow rollout for 20/40Mbps so if they want to capture a larger chunk of the market, they need to confirm this :p.

Problem is, all they're doing by doing this, is leaving the rest of us people that aren't in the VDSL rollout areas, in the dark for even longer. Some exchanges still don't support even 4Mbps.

But yes, the prices are pretty good.

It should be rollover as long as you have an account. This rollover expiring is BS.
 
I'm sure the 10 people who can actually get the VDSL will be very happy.

This will unfortunately only work on the new VDSL offerings from Telkom.

Back to capped accounts again? With data packages that you can easily get on a 4Mb line for something upto 10 times as fast?

That is pathetic.

Because very few will be able to afford uncapped packages? 10mbps platinum uncapped from Openweb goes for R2899. R5k-R10k on top of line costs gets fairly close to business-grade fibre lines from the likes of Neotel and Co.
 
The rollover of data (even if it is only for 10 months) is brilliant and one can only hope other ISPs start offering this on their capped accounts. The pricing is also very aggressive compared to what is out there right now, but there is still a little voice in the back of my head going: "Sure, R2300 for 500gigs *sounds* good, but you wouldn't pay that for a hard drive of that size would you?"
Yes, I know you can't compare hdds with data, but still...

This is what VOX is actually saying!!!

"And the best thing of all is if your a streaming whore that likes to watch movies in Super HD from unofficial free streaming sites (which is the main reasons lines like these exist) YOUR SH** out of luck!!"

I dunno if its just me... but... FASTER/FASTEST LINES = UNCAPPED BANDWIDTH!!! (I thought that would be obvious!). Basically your paying for this awesome line but can only use it periodically throughout the month, seeing if you keep on using you'll be capped before you know it, scratching your head going... "WTF my 300 GB is finished already???"

In hind sight your paying more for the same thing a 4 or 10MB line can do! *Slow claps* BRAVO... bravo...
