I have a 3Gs on iOS 6.1.

I used evasi0n to jb my phone last month (untethered). Very simple, all went well. Cydia installed, a host of sources and apps acquired and a smile on my face. Until last night that is. I was messing around with something on Cydia and all hell broke loose on my phone. My screen was now covered in icons that were previously all neat and tidy in 3 folders (I use infini-folder and infini-board). I re-opened Cydia and it was on the infiniboard app details. I re-installed the app no problems. When I went back to Cydia to install infini-folder again Cydia would crash after a couple of seconds. I restarted my device and tried to use Safari to find a solution. Safari also crashed. As soon as I got to work I began experimenting with a number of things. I tried to restore to a backup previous to jailbreak and tried to jb again. Failed. It gave me an error saying that my phone is already semi-tethered broken. So, I downloaded redsn0w to do a tethered boot of my phone. Something went wrong an I ended up soft bricking my phone. Couldn't turn it on or anything. Panic and a quick google search later I managed to switch the phone back on. I went through the tethered reboot process again via redsn0w and received the following error: Missing Keys.plist data for this build Redsnow iOS 6.0.1. I then tried to erase everything on the phone (not via itunes ie from the option in settings) which just hung for over an hour. You cannot reset a jbroken phone. I then restored my phone to this morning's backup. So now I am at exactly the same point I was at this morning, a messy semi-tethered phone that won't open any of my cydia apps or cydia itself. All hope is not lost though, I am going to download the iOS 6 .ipsw to my laptop at home tonight. On redsn0w there is an option to manually select the ipsw and tether boot your 6.1 device. If this fails, I will have a new paper weight. I will update thread with any progress made.

Sounds like you might have a conflict with a couple of your jailbreak tweaks. If you have SBSettings installed you can try selectively switching off tweaks from there and see if that helps.

I don't :( There are a few things that would have helped me if I had installed. As soon as I resolve this problem I have a list of apps I will install immediately. The first is OpenSSH...

No Springtomize either?

I am very new to all of this. Name them and I will get them :)

Okay, tried and failed 3 times to get the IPSW downloaded last night. I have now installed downloadmanager to make it easier. Today I am having lots of fun browsing my phone's directories.

Springtomize allows you to tweak many aspects on your phone - dock, lockscreen, icons, status bar etc etc etc. It also has the same functionality as for SBSettings in that you can toggle mobile substrate addons if you need to debug your phone.

I've got SBSettings, Springtomize and Winterboard on my 3GS on iOS 5.1.1 , they seem to cohabit pretty well and I can get the phone looking and working just how I want it.

I'm watching your 6.1 update closely since I'm considering an update to that once my favourite tweaks are reported working.

Not sure why you are battling so much and making it so complicated. Firstly, you NEVER wipe/clear the phone from settings if it is jailbroken. That will brick it.
Anything that happens to the phone can be solved by getting into dfu mode (there is normally a way) and then doing a restore.
In your case, you need to download the current firmware, SHIFT/restore to install the firmware clean without any old files, and then re-jailbreak using evasi0n.
Then take it easy with the cydia apps as they conflict sometimes and mess up the phone.

Good morning.

So, Saturday morning I managed to download the IPSW for 6.0 because redsn0w doesn't recognise the 6.1 ipsw restore file. I then opened redsn0w as admin and selected the option to manually select the ipsw. I then selected to boot the phone tethered and it worked like a charm. First thing I did was go to Cydia and install the evasi0n untethered patch. Phone is working perfectly. I will download Springtomise, SBSettings and Winterboard today.

Cheers,

Good to hear. The tweaks you mention here will keep you busy for a bit, it amazes me the extent to which the phone can be personalized.

If you're running a Windows PC you could get iFunbox or similar, helps with theming when you want to alter individual icons/elements.

Thanks for the advice! I will try it. I love being able to mess with a phone so much. I had a Nokia N900 a while back that was completely open source. This is almost as fun :)
