This is how "SMS spammers" get your number

“There are various ways to obtain consumer data, public domain being the source we mostly obtain our data from. I requested to search for both Deeds and CIPRO information and found your information is listed on both databases,” said Hinnings.

In a follow-on interview with MyBroadband, Hinnings explained that the public sources may not list mobile numbers, but contain other identifiable information like ID numbers.

The company can then use the ID number to consult the credit bureau to obtain other personal information like mobile numbers.

isn't accessing our information from the credit bureau without our approval against the law?

Yes it is illegal.

Personal Information held by credit bureaux is already handled under the National Credit Act, and the credit bureaux cannot just furnish reports on individuals without good cause. What IS a good cause is set out in Regulation 18(4) & (5), and "direct marketing" is not listed as a good cause.

A legal expert substantiated Blue Label Data Solutions’ views, saying that “There is nothing stopping a person from obtaining information from the Deeds Office or CIPRO and there is nothing stopping a person from sending SPAM provided an opt-out method is offered for electronic communications”.

...find another one (expert that is)

Blue Label Data Solutions highlighted that the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) states that a company sending SMS messages ‘provide you with details on how we obtained your cell number, and make provision for you to opt out on the National Opt Out register run by the DMA’.

According to the company it abided by these requirements, and is hence not guilty of anything illegal.
Are they saying that they do that? Heck, how do you even know who sent the message in the first place? I have yet to find a company that spams actually tell you where they got your details.

As for the CIPRO and other online Databases, it's amazing what www.windeed.co.za will tell you about someone for a tiny fee.

I think accessing your credit profile is, not sure about contact info.

A List Broker may not Obtain any Credit Info from the Credit Bureaux, unless they are CPA members and even that they may not do a full credit check on you.
They do a thing called batch run whereby they simply get your score, that process does not leave a footprint

If we have your ID number on file, the Bureaux will supply us with your latest contact numbers, this is legal

It is deemed that the relationshiphiop is between the List Broker and The Client the Bureaux will never ever update data if you dont have the ID number.

The Bureaux's dont sell data, they merely update your client list.

I just wish someone would shoot whoever sends out those fraudulent TV license payment requests.

WASPA’s prevention of spam code of conduct:

Members will not send or promote the sending of spam and will take reasonable measures to ensure that their facilities are not used by others for this purpose.

Any direct marketing message is considered spam, unless:

- the recipient has requested the message;
AND/OR ???

- the message recipient has a prior commercial relationship with the message originator and has been given a reasonable opportunity to object to direct marketing communications;
AND/OR ???

- the organisation supplying the originator with the recipient’s contact information has the recipient’s explicit consent to do so.

It is not clear whether these three conditions should all be met or if meeting only one would suffice. AND/OR ???

Im glad that someone took the time to report it, these companies rely on people just being annoyed but not actually doing anything about it. Im registered on the opt out database so if I get a call I explain it to the consultant who promptly puts the phone down.

You should not be even getting a call.
Prior to us launching anycampaignn we run our database through the DNC, Do Not Call, list and remove all clients who are listed.

I don't know if I even want to register on this DMA opt out site.

Regardless, I don't get too many call or sms spam. The few calls I do get, it helps to just be rude, and usually end up on the other person quickly giving up and ending the call for me. Too bad cuz I like to have fun with them when they call.
The SMS spam is probably only once or twice in a 3 month period, so not too bad. Then again, I am used to receiving sms spam from outage reports at work as well as internet banking every time you do a transaction.

How do you obtain access to this or where do you register? We do a lot of tracing and it would be very useful for us to be able to get the number from ID numbers, names etc. For legit reason :)

Any suggestion on an app for Symbian 3 to block calls and smses of a certain number?

You can approach any of the 3 Big Bureaux's, Transunion, XDS or Experian
You will fill in some docs and then you will be able to use the services
You can either do it online or in a batch
Batch is cheaper.

I registered more than a year ago and the calls have reduced by 99,9%.
