Hi guys

Having a problem with my mother's 2005 Renault Megane 1.6 Auto. Yesterday while driving the car just went dead - cut out completely. Everything is dead. Car won't start, lights, radio, aircon, electric windows, all dead. boot is locked and won't open. Central locking remote works. Speedometer stuck at 90km/h

Roadside assistance tried to jump start the battery. Tested Battery - it's completely dead. When trying to jumpstart with cables, there was some smoke coming out of somewhere, next to engine. Technician says its an electrical fault.

Does anyone know of a good auto electrician in the Wynberg area (Johannesburg)?

I'm thinking of having it towed to Motorlek Wynberg. Anyone dealt with them? Other option is Northway Electrauto SA (also in Wynberg)

Any input welcome on who to take it to or what the problem might be.

Thanks

... and the big problem comes in, the guys at Renault/Peugeot/Citroen are fine as mechanics, but useless as auto-electricians, so taking it to a dealer isn't going to help you.

Motolek in Wynberg was a lot cheaper than anywhere else that I looked at when I had problems with my alternator. I ended up fixing the problem myself though so I can't comment on their service. There is a Battery World a few blocks up the road if you are looking for a cheap replacement battery (Exide from Botswana). They were very helpful and found the problem with my alternator which I was able to fix by replacing the regulator (~R100 from Midas). They also offer a free call out service if you are nearby.

Took the vehicle to Motolek Wynberg. It was a short in the wiring. They fixed the problem and changed the headlight. Price was reasonable (thankfully :o). They were professional and efficient. I would recommend them. http://www.wynbergmotolek.co.za

Ask if it was rodent damage?
If so, start feeding the buggers rattex.

No it wasn't. I have no idea what it was. My mother said she felt like she knocked a brick, but that could have just been when the car cut out suddenly. I don't know.
