KFC investigates card scam malware

Scary stuff indeed, I wonder how they infected the back office machines?

One of the following :

1. Corrupt field technicians
2. Spear phishing
3. Drive-by infections via web browsers
4. Weak website security, or databases not protected well enough.

Hats off to KFC for at least speaking about it, although limited information is provided [understandably].

So far nothing from any of the other brands/outlets that I know off.

Maybe it is time for South Africa to hop aboard the Bitcoin train and let us start paying for things out of secure eWallets, by scanning a QR code with our smartphones at the till and approving the payment via an app?

This is the future my friends! You can trade bitcoins at bitx.co.za. You can also buy bitcoins at virwox.com, which is much easier to use than mtgox.com.

Join the Bitcoin Revolution and trade in a secure online currency that is not controlled by a Reserve Bank and is not subject to arbitrary debasement.

Not much useful info for KFC clients! Location? Frequency? Would be more useful.

Looks like KFC got popped by the Streetwise Two!

Guess quite a few guavamint officials were surprised by their credit card statements!

The fascinating thing is that there are two factors in play...
3rd world - insecure systems (SA), card details are skimmed
1st world (US and Europe) - insecure systems where card and payer details aren't checked at transaction time.

In this type of fraud the banks take the loss not the customer.

KFC runs your card through their till and then though the bank's speed point.

I'm guessing the leaked card info was gained from the swipe through their till systems and not the bank's system.

Nice photo of Sub-Zero on the article header.

What about my R2 donation? Is that now possibly lost as well?

Maybe, but in the meantime, the MONEY is GONE out of your account. How do you buy groceries while you wait for a refund?

And when will your account be cleaned out again?

I PAID CASH at KFC this weekend. Better safe than sorry.

Hell, I'm forever swiping coz I forget to withdraw, I was a victim of identity fraud recently, an account was opened in my name at foschini and R8k worth of stuff bought under my name. even though my ID is with me and has never been lost!! Only way these people can get away with this is if there's someone working with them on the inside.
