Free legal defence for first e-toll case

Bookmarked.

(And yes, this is the best advertising any lawyer company can do).

Awesome - I like this.

Their site indicates they're a 7 person team that deals in the usual bundle of property, conveyancing, family law, wills, and divorce law - debt collecting is also mentioned which could be useful here.

I assume they'll only be going as far as the actual toll collection aspects? I wonder what their angle will be.

is that legal to advertise for free? I was under the impression that ambulance chasers were frowned upon in South Africa.

This is very clever advertising. They are not breaking and rules or regulations. They are just stating that they will do the first case for free, or otherwise known as pro bono. Which they can do (but don't do often).

According to a recent news item, there is a +40% chance that the first case will be about mistaken idendity, since +40% of number plates in the Gauteng province are cloned (according to the article). The burden of proof will be on Sanral to show that it was in fact the offender who used the toll road.

Ah, that's fantastic haha.

My neighbour down the road is from Chad in West Africa. He has a similar plate to this, and reckons he is safe:

You'll be lucky to do a 10th of that on a Monday morning on the N1

I wonder if people in London also reacted like this when they got tolled with a congestion tax.

That's only cool if they win.
If they lose, you could go to jail

I'd wait to see if the pro-bono stance continues with further customers. They are probably seeing this as a means to make money in the long run.

How so?
They hand you over to debt collectors. Debt != go to jail.

Not really.

If you loose you need to pay your outstanding toll account and any fines the court impose if there was a warrant for your arrest.

You will get fined or even go to jail not for debt, but rather breaking the law in using a toll road without paying - which is the basic same law around the world.

Half the people in England might hate their government, but they do not utterly distrust them as much as the literate portion of the South African population does.

Any law firms with spare capacity should sell - Nee tags at R50 pm subscription similar to legal wise and cover the legal costs if required of all customers should they be found guilty of not paying their e-toll account.

Would be millionaires overnight.
