It seems that when companies look at cutting costs, jobs are always the first to go :(

Those jobs of people who sit around and do nothing, thus adding no efficiency or value to the business.
That seems alright, but he also mentioned "cost cuts", which also seems alright.

Yeah, the executives, directors & senior managers ...oh wait.
 
Can a parastatal really turn itself around?
Telkom alone accounts for almost 1% to our inflation.
Imagine if all the government companies pulled their socks up?
Wait, then we would have 95% unemployment.

The plan of mass breeding ignorant voters is really not looking so good now huh?

If you are serious about cutting personnel, you must start at the top. For every senior manager there is probably 3-4 admin and support staff who become redundant automatically. It also sends the correct message to employees/unions/authorities/public: we are serious about this and it is not just an excuse to get rid of the blue collar workers we don't like.
 
I disagree to an extent. Telkom has ALWAYS been overstaffed to a large degree due to agreements with Gov, CWU and others. Kinda held random by these to retain staff until proven unable to support.

Modern telecom operators follow the same strategy of cell operators whereby most of the technical stuff is outsourced to various vendors and the actual company is a managing one filled with retail, business and engineering personal. Since privatization they've wanted to 'transform' the company but been told to retain and so every few years they go thru the same thing over and over cutting stuff to get their numbers 'inline'. By norms, telkom staff numbers are ware higher than normal
 
We still can't get Telkom in a lot of complexes. There is a huge market that Telkom could tap into. I've been waiting for 2 years now for an ADSL line. The complex has conduits for Telkom to run their cables and there are houses across the road with ADSL, but Telkom are too lazy to pull some copper through and open their network up to hundreds of new customers. This isn't just the case here, I know of several complexes who have the same problem.

As far as i know very few people are actually "working" at Telkom.

Where do you get that from? Certainly not true. Might be to an extent for Eskom but not Telkom.

How do you measure that? I can sit in front of my PC and pretend to be busy whole day...throughput is measured by what is delivered, what if the number of projects for the year is low and you only work every now and then?
 
I'm quite impressed with this CEO since he started its really looking like Telkom is turning around. If Telkom does well it will benefit the whole country

Making the right noises may impress some people , actually doing some thing to sort the problems out are a totally different matter .
The staff and the subscribers know what the problems are speak to them and sort the problems out .
Talk is cheap money buys whisky !!!!!
 
Is there reason why the CEO,s make these statements and get unions on them. Can they not just do it quietly and slowly overtime ? They need to target few redundant non performing employees at a time.
