Telkom is in talks with Netflix

Telkom in the blue corner flexing its muscles while Naspers is shivering like a twig in the red!
 
So, am I understanding this correctly?
Will it only provide netflix to VDSL subscribers?

also, I am pretty sure they will try and screw us over with pricing.
I honestly doubt they will be able to keep the same $8 price
 
I am not sure what this means for Netflix, other than it possibly becoming officially available in SA. What is the big fuss?

The exact model isn't confirmed yet, but last time I chatted to someone at Telkom about this they said it could be a "value add" for only Telkom Internet subscribers.

So it probably won't be limited to just VDSL users, but it may be limited to subscribers at Telkom's ISP.

Just to emphasise: the model isn't confirmed yet. These are just options they are talking about.

Seeing as anyone with a service like unotelly can get it, they will hopefully try to keep it around that level.
 
I can only imagine this would mean Telkom would do direct peering with Netflix and run some local cache servers.

We might get a local currency option and gateway but I doubt the platform would change at all.
 
I'll be very surprised seeing full Netflix make it to SA, sorting out the copyright legalities would be massively intimidating for Telkom. They could maybe organise a watered down SA version though.

Copyright has always been the issue. If I'm not mistaken the fpb (the content rating people in sa) also don't make things any easier.
 
This all depends on what talks with Naspers means, could mean that Telekom is flexing their muscles or could mean that they are being pushed around.
I hope this goes well and we get a decent package for a decent price. It could mean that we get the content at better speeds and with a cheaper local data
 
Please don't talk to Naspers this can only be a bad thing for the consumer.

Many, many people aren't stuck on 4mbps anymore. If your maximum speed is 4mbps, then, well, sucks to be you. There are areas in well developed, first world countries where you don't get 4mbps either.

The only reason I'm stuck on 4Mbps is money :p vDSL should be available in my area this year :)

Netflix works perfectly fine on my 4Mb line uncapped package from Afrihost using my WDTV Live media player. In fact it works so well I've cancelled my DSTV subscription.

You tried BBC yet? It sometimes buffers, but the content is quite good.
But I've found there is less buffering of Netflix if I cast it to my Chromecast :confused:
 
Didn't ranger just mention the other day that the Netflix thing is unlikely to happen because the SA market is way too small?
