Telkom splits wholesale and retail operations

I was just finishing off an email to ask them for the documents emerging from the settlement ...

Ok,is this now the BIG BANG some of us have been making a noise about, minus LLU?If so...COOL!!:)

it was in the works from the day the Comp Comm settlement was signed - nothing really new actually. In fact a code is in the settlement as are IPC price reductions and so on

The hold up with LLU quite simply is that ICASA aren't enforcing facilities leasing and Telkom aren't seeing the opportunities

Just read about XDSL starting to sell wholesale access.
It will work, if Telkom utterly splits their wholesale and retail, and then wholesale maintains the copper at a reasonable fee. In effect mitigating the cost of LLU, so that more business can wholesale their overseas fibre and we can start getting mush cheaper adsl prices.

Again, the hurdles are Telkom, ICASA, and the Minister of Comms

they have already - and have to - split their wholesale and retail the things now to sit down and get in place are products of a wholesale nature that make LLU a reality and to start adhering to the facilities leasing principles and regulations

I'd include the larger ISPs on that hurdle list

The problem is that wholesale is sitting on a large infrastructure (cash cow) that they can make a packet out out, just by maintenance fees. Currently they are the sole big boys in this space.

Retail has bugger-all comparatively and is playing in a highly competitive market. People in this division are pooping their drawers.

wholesale however is sitting with a diminishing annuity and the culture of fixation on revenues is what has stuffed Telkom over. The retail operations that is Telkom Internet have been wonderfully competitive and really has a future. I am also not sure that we should right off TM ...

My view - and I've expressed it often enough :D - is that Telkom need to get a landlord and maintenance of underlying facilities business going. "NakedDSL" can be offered tomorrow but its going to cost.
