Article: Shale gas in Karoo a game-changer: Zuma

Shale gas in the Karoo will prove "a game-changer" for the South African economy, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

In his state-of-the-nation address, delivered at Parliament, he told MPs government had evaluated the risks and opportunities involved in extracting shale gas, a process known as fracking.

It's not a process called fracking. Ffs. Fracking is one aspect of shale gas extraction. He is right though. Massive economic opportunity that is well worth the relatively low attached risk...

I own property in the Karoo and I love the planet and believe in responsible resource utilisation and so ... I support responsible fracking. :)

I concur. I just pray that the incumbents involved in this study was above board and that we as a nation will real benefits from this if successful and not the ANC elite only!

It would be impossible for only the ANC to benefit from it - even if there is corruption on a large scale. It could double the economy and drive the rand back towards apartheid levels (if the ANC lack the foresight to avoid Dutch Disease).

Forget cfc's, oil any of that stuff. Shale Gas is going to be the greatest disaster our atmosphere has ever seen, has just given us another 100 years of available fossil fuels and it's attached CO2.

Tell me another fallacy! ;)

I wonder if the company will have to pay the state royalties like how companies mining for minerals do?
It's not impossible for the ANC to benefit. All their shell companies and families will invest in the project just like how most of the MP's I've seen have significant mine shares.

Oh jees... not anther one. You clearly know NOTHING on the subject. :erm:

Go do some reading.

Hell no. Don't want that rand at those levels... It would cause untold chaos. R7 or so to the dollar and I'll be happy.

It's going to f*** up the environment. It's not a solution.

Before the "I believe all the things that the oil companies spin doctor"'s start commenting.

Just realize this. We have a large enough labour force as China (the country that won the capitalism game.), to top them however, we have Gold, we have Diamonds.
Do you really, really think that a little shale from the Karoo is going to make us rise anywhere with the current leaders.

Even if it is a teeny tiny bit bad for the beautiful country that we are born in. It is still the decision to degrade the country by a teeny tiny bit for some extra paper (money) that will be syphoned out by the ANC cronies.

Please do elaborate further

How about every mining company would leave, large swathes of our manufacturing would disappear... the list goes on.

Because I can guarantee you, nobody will want salary cuts to Apartheid era salaries.

Go and learn about the process before you actually spout the nonsense propaganda please.

Salaries might have been smaller, but R10.00 would get you a full tank of petrol. Is it not all relative?
