Apple asked for help on Pistorius’ iPhone

South African prosecutors pressing a murder charge against Oscar Pistorius secured a meeting Thursday with Apple officials in the United States over accessing potentially crucial evidence on the double-amputee athlete’s locked iPhone, they said.

The SA taxpayer has to pay for 3 guys to travel to the opposite side of the world because Oscar forgot the code for his iDevices. If there is something incriminating on those devices I hope they nail Oscar.

Did he lose the passcode on the lock screen or the apple account password?

Because if he "forgot" the lock screen passcode then he has something to hide.

He forgot his passcode. His apple id and password he gave

Explain the difference to us Non-iPhoneys

Passcode - four digit code to unlock homescreen.

iCloud - like your Google account.

As far as I remember, he forgot his passcode, but not the password for the iCloud account. However, messages are only stored on the phone.

How do you forget a code that is typed every time you access the phone! Meh

iPhones have hardware encryption modules that store the passcode.

iCloud passwords are stored on Apple servers.

I was asking according to the statement above yours...so no difference in my book.

Fsck knows... But I bet there's some incriminating stuff on his phone, I mean, to be this blunt about it... He's obviously got something to hide.

since the passcode is 4 numbers what stops them from typing in from 0000 to 9999. will take a while but won't that be cheaper than flying to Apple HQ?

A while? Would you like to be the one that does that? :P

Why don't they just try every combination if it's only 4 digits. Or does it lock you out after a number of tries?

That's assuming he just used a numerical passcode and hasn't enabled the ten mistakes and wipe.

Apple probably have the mechanism at their HQ to unblock an iPhone in a matter of seconds. For example you can download applications that bruce force to find all usernames on windows machines in about 10 minutes.

He doesn't want the world to see his 'selfies'. I would also conveniently forget my passcode.

What is worth password protection system if can be bypassed by the manufacturer?
