Netflix, Hulu streaming illegal in South Africa

Two points.

I'm apparently already a criminal for not cancelling, and paying, my TV licence while overseas for 3 years. So now I am again...

Simple solution, get licensing sorted and get Netflix etc into the country. Enough protecting these monopolies already! They need to change their models of they want to survive.
 
Yawn... The 80's called, they want their "zone" argument back.

Aha, so MonoChoice is actually admitting to anti-competitive practices designed to extend its monopoly and keep its prices high whilst actively striking clandestine deals with content providers to keep South Africa in the dark ages.

MonoChoice must be awfully surprised to learn that their business model is not universally accepted.

MultiChoice said that the studios and content producers who own the rights to the content sell it to them and other TV providers for our territory at a certain price.

Well then it's obvious that MonoChoice should also use a VPN service to get US-region content at a better price than they have currently agreed to :rolleyes: I'm joking of course.
 
Don't support monopolies so will continue using Unotelly.The really criminal behaviour here is MC's prices.
 
Netflix could potentially nail you as well if they cared, since you'd be violating their Terms of Service and therefore the US's CFAA by changing IP.

So even though you're incredibly unlikely to have the US try to extradite you, by streaming it from Netflix you're ratcheting the violation up from piracy to potentially extra charges.
 
Stuff them!

I would be and was paying BSTV but they canned the scifi channel (now syfy) without cause or reason so sue me since I have to watch it from somewhere else.

Just can't wait for daylight saving cause the time zone makes me stay up way too late :-)
 
Welcome to the future, dinosaurs. There's no decoders and silly "walkas" in the future. Just me, my internet connection and my computer. The future isn't about tv schedules are broadcasting times but about video on demand and watch what you like. Sorry DSTV but you really screwed the pooch with this one. Even the BBC have go the right idea. Satellite TV will lose to the internet, its only a matter or time and there's goes monochoice down the drain, Naspers. Paying R700 pm with my R2000 decoder and my R1000 dish (All just purpose build) vs my R500 pm internet connection and my computer (multi-uses). DSTV is really not something I care for.
 
I think we need to start a petition to bring netflix to SA :) i guess if we can get netflix other services will soon follow.

MultiChoice pays nicely for the privilege of exclusivity and the prospect of some vague revenue from iTunes/Netflix/Google Play/Xbox Video is unlikely to be worth the effort for them. However, MultiChoice will be happy to offer their own ****ty online streaming service that you can suffer through.

No HD though. The turds at monochoice couldn't care less. If I can't even get decent quality streaming on a damn phone screen.

I yesterday spoke to a lawyer and he said it was illegal to end sentences with lawyer...

Technically it would be illegal to take your decoder with when camping in Botswana, Zambia etc. as you have to sign up with the local DSTV office there.

You can get a Sky package for £32 a month that is comparable to that of DSTV (Includes 50+ channels, internet and VOD) Grab a Slingbox and you have your own cable TV wherever you are. Is it legal? Probably not. Archaic laws can change if there is enough public support for it.
