Getting to the root of ADSL problems

Hi guys,

My friend is having serious ADSL problems on a very complicated, messy network. I have an ASUS RT-AC66U on the way which will replace an old DIR-615. Will still be using the DSL-2500U for ADSL. They were on Openweb for months which seemed to be a big problem, but I'm trying to figure out if there may be other issues. Primary uses which aren't running stable at the moment include general Facebook, Youtube and Playstation 4 online gaming (can't get that to work at all). It seems after 6PM it gets worse too (will do tests at night at some point)

sorry about the issues but those reports are very interesting indeed.

Initially I thought clear case of congestion. I think I've concluded that this is a clear case of intermittent congestion :erm:

I purchased an Axxess 1GB prepaid account now and compared against Afrihost and Webafrica prepaid. Going to try again around 6 or 7PM as it gets worse around then.

Congestion is the most likely culprit. Everyone gets home from work and starts downloading, not enough bandwidth to go around and everyone suffers. It already starts from around 4pm according to your tracerts and then just gets progressively worse.

Log a fault with Telkom.

I am not here all the time but it's pretty apparent from what I've heard from my friend the internet is definitely worse from 6PM and after. What will Telkom do about this? Is there any way to show them my results? The Telkom guy came to the house and ran a test during the day and blamed their network setup. I did all these tests connected straight to the DSL-2500U.

I had terrible congestion in Constantia but more towards the Nek for almost 2 years. It was fixed at the start of this month with the exchange upgrades, hopefully your area is on track for an upgrade. You could also use that list of regional managers (around here somewhere) to contact someone in the area and request to be moved to an MSAN. Good luck

Still having issues!

I'm in Claremont, Cape Town and suffering the same symptoms as you guys on my 4MB 'uncapped' line. Everything goes downhill after 5pm and it is just AWFUL. It has even started becoming sluggish during the day!

My pings are consistently 400ms+, downloads 20kb/s all day all night. I've tried several modems and ISP accounts that I know work 100%
