Vodacom network buckling under free 1GB load

Gosh it certainly is, its thinking of just using our ADSL rather.

Edit: On further inspection I see there is no LTE coverage in the Southern Suburbs, CT. They can keep their 1 GB :(

Their own fault and they should have applied some thought to the matter.

Give 1 gig free, but you have 30 days to use it instead of forcing everyone to use it in a single day and then have the balls to call them abusing customers.

Disgusting.

I doubt all 33 million are trying to use the network. I imagine the majority of users don't have a data device, phone or dedicated. This means the network capacity is a lot lower than expected

Where have VC (or a senior VC person) called users "abusing"? Haven't seen something to that effect - might have simply missed it

I think so as well.

The more people that try access a tower, the smaller the towers footprint get. Getting a whole lot of users to hit a network close to capacity would cause compounded problems. There would be less negative impact if Vodacom offered all users 1GB of data a month all the time. This way they wont have bandwidth starved users slamming the network at the same time.

Yes they should have given 1Gb over a period. Even a week or something. I think they were banking on most people not using the data.

When will Vodacon ever wake up and understand that we now know they are a ripping us off.

In the 20 years since you started Vodacon, we've grown up and have gained wisdom enough to know that you will not give something for free... Ever! There will always be a catch, con or some other underhand deceit like that your flimsy network couldn't possibly handle every user attempting to use one gigabyte of data!

Slowly does it now. We would not want the network to go into a speed wobble.

Jannie, I don't give Vodacom too much credit for this freebie. I see the reasons for this offer, in the following order of precedence...

1. Advertising - Billboards have become boring, lets try something different. Rather than spend tens of millions on TV/Radio/sponsorship, changing to red etc etc, give the buggers a bit of free data....hopefully 5 % of them will sign a contract.
2. Let's catch the buggers that go OOB
3. Test out the network under load - i.e.. use the buggers as guinea pigs
4. Lets show the country that we are good guys, and give the buggers a birthday present (although they are hoping for a form of reward)

Maybe the order is not right, but that is how I see it

Oh...thanks Vodacom, now I cannot use my VC contract because my speeds are down to 0.07 Mbps download

Not that I bothered to avail myself to this, but this was inevitable if you expect everybody to use 1GB in a day. If it had been a week or month to use the data, the fail in this promo would not have been so epic. Was VC really thinking that people would only use 10 to 50 MBs of data? :erm:

I would wager that a large portion of their customer base used either nothing or very little (eg. under 50Mb). And VC were aware of these odds when advancing this gift...

If EVERY VC contract customer were to use their 1GB today, VC's network would most probably crash!

Remember the days of the 087 mess? Just after 7pm whole exchanges and trunk routes would implode... effectively the same thing.

Good point. Agreed.

If every Vodacom subscriber line (so one physical subscriber with multiple account offerings) were to use 1GB in 24 hours I think the entire African continent wouldn't have enough capacity

On the other hand if every ADSL subscriber were to use an extra gig in 24 hours I don't think we'd have a real problem at all.
