Vodacom network buckling under free 1GB load

Vodacom’s data network is struggling to handle the load in some areas with thousands of subscribers trying to make the most of their free 1GB data gift.
Vodacom has given all of its subscribers 1GB of free data to use today (11 May 2014) as part of its twentieth birthday celebration.
Some people predicted that Vodacom’s network would struggle to handle the load, and this prediction came true.
Comments about the issue included “speed is pathetic”, “trying to update apps and it’s crawling” and “not working – just too slow to be of any value”.
MyBroadband tested the Vodacom network in Centurion shortly after 15:00, and the results showed that there was good reason to complain.
Many other Vodacom customers also posted information showing that Vodacom’s network provided dial-up speeds.
There were also complaints that Vodacom’s online services gave problems on Sunday.
Lots of positive feedback as well
Some good news is that Vodacom’s LTE network and 3G network in many areas did not seem to be affected significantly by the free data.
“Was pretty much blazing where I had LTE and decent 3G coverage,” said one user in Balito.
“Thank you Vodacom – all working out as presented, carry on with the good work,” said another.
