Choosing your own DStv channels will cost more: MultiChoice

Makes sense to me, too - for a while. Until the smaller marginal special-interest channels die and all we're left with Reality TV and cooking channels.

The specialist channels will migrate to web streaming, with all the monetization challenges that route poses.

Channel unbundling makes the future of broadcast TV even bleaker. But it's perhaps an inevitable move.

Oh sh*t! It took a special analyst to discover this? This is pretty obvious, does not necessarily mean that the consumer needs to be worse off. But the dinosaurs don't want to do this...
 
What about a Pay-Per-View model in terms of sports events which offer individual sports events for a fee. I would pay R20 per F1 Race for example.
 
Why can't they carry as many channels as they want but instead of selling you the bouquet with pre-determined channels you have to buy a pack of 40+ Channels, that way consumers could tailor their needs more and it isn't too different from the current bouquet system to impact them much. It would probably only work for the more premium bouquets. Priced within the Premium package now for example (R400-600?)
 
They should offer a "sport" and "non-sport" type of bouquet. It seems that the sport channels are the most expensive.

What MC has now done it has lost every possible cent it could get from my household, and Telkom, Netflix etc get it.
 
Does SuperSport own the rights to broadcast sport in this country?
If not then why has another provider not stepped in?
It's quite obvious that there is a gap in the market.

The other provider will have to have a lot of subscribers, before the can buy the rights. You cannot just buy sport rights and hope they will come. This is what GTV did in Africa a few years back. Tied up rights to lots of football and thought the subscribers would just stream in. They never did and GTV just switched of their services one day, never to be heard from again.
