Yes, if it leads to lower insurance rates for good drivers.

But I somehow suspect the apps efficacy would be disputed by those who end up paying more.

Not a bad idea honestly. If only they linked this evaluation to premium estimates somehow, that could very well interest people in switching over.
Something like :
Oh so you are within the top X % of the country in terms of safe driving, which means you can qualify for so and so extras or discounts on your basic premium. Would you like someone to contact you for a no obligation quote?

The Discovery Insure app uses a smartphone’s accelerometer and GPS to provide a driver with detailed driving information including harsh braking and cornering, distracted driving, speeding, personalised driving tips, and a leaderboard function that ranks a driver’s score against that of their friends as well as other drivers in South Africa.
 
I'm not a harsh driver or something, but I'd prefer if the app were a little discreet
 
Tried it now. 5 stars for everything except harsh cornering and speeding. Issue with speeding is due to roads with no indication whatsoever on speed limits.


Edit : and now it started monitoring my driving while I'm standing in the hospital. Let's hope my cornering doesn't bump into any geriatrics.

Scientifically measures something that is subjective ? ... All these insurance apps are loaded in their favour. Driving at 50 KM/H on the highway will give you a very good rating.... but is that safe?
 
5 tickets and 5 stars for my first trip with the app. Looking forward to seeing what my driving score will be.

Yeah I'm using it. Sitting at 17 tickets thus far after using the app to deduce the actual speed limit for the section of road which was screwing with me. Who'd have guessed a 2x2 road with no buildings would have a limit of 70!?
 
Interesting.

Second trip only registered 4 stars. I like the info it provides about the trip.
