Big Data is just being collected at this stage but the collection will most probably be stopped if realtime data analysis on live data could one day become a reality for organisations like the NSA, which should eliminate the need to constantly store everything for later analysis. IMHO. This article does seem overly paranoid i.t.o. storage though.

Interesting though, don't seem to see the article anywhere else or the rambling made by Mark Whitby. All I know is that they are already producing modular memory replacements to a large extend to answer the cloud demand, designed to replace storage in datacentres.

The article is really about people (the world) being collectors or in the correct term, hoarders.
 
its also about the failure for more imaginative methods of long life on-line (as in connected not necessarily on the Internet) storage than magnetized tape and disks to come to full fruit

we need to get to a point of growing our data centers - there was work a couple of years ago on plant based storage which is awesomeness, but we haven't to my knowledge really got the technology to that point: WD Green drives aren't really Green

Yep, EOL is a big policy (Drive Retirement Policy) in datacentres under Lifecycle Management. "Greener"-alternatives are also a big topic, something memory storage is answering to a large degree except when it comes to production (in regard with manufacturing).

Haha, Paul do you know of any case studies on plant storage? I want to take a look tomorrow as I'm back at work and this is something to look at on a small scale in a lab environment, based on research made by others with access to capital.

Thanks Paul, whenever I read bio in tech terms involving computing I tend to ignore until something conclusive and feasible pops up.

Plant storage however is something which can be discussed with role players, looking at micro scale, the research and participation therein. Reading the article, they still have big challenges ahead, the universities involved shows great motivation to make this realistic.
 
sorry, but I was thinking this was a dumb article already about three lines into the article.
 
I am by no means an environmentalist but the idea of grown storage that can be solar powered (photosynthesis) just appeals to me on so many levels.

Also it gives a whole new meaning to an Active Directory Forest ...

Haha, for me it is about the available resources. Biology can take tech to new levels, just think how this will affect HDD cloning. This also brings mobility to manufacturing.
