What 100Mbps uncapped fibre will cost in Parkhurst

The 4Mbps prices seem ok.

But the data costs on the 50Mbps & 100Mbps are just ridiculously expensive.
Can't see much uptake at those prices.

What happened to the R2 to R3 per GB, that Vumatel were aiming for?

With no Telkom IPC I would of thought data on Vuma would have been under current ADSL data prices?

At the 100GB to 200GB range Afrihost ADSL data in currently R2/GB i.e. R199 (100GB) & R399 (200GB).

The 4Mbps prices are fantastic but there should be a decent 20Mbps service with a 100GB cap for under R1000 all inclusive. I'd stick to my 10Mbps ADSL from Telkom.

What sort of assumptions are made in respect to uptake of this project? Going to be difficult to keep the prices down if it's only a few raping the internet.

I think about 700 or so of the 2,100 Parkhurst residents have given a "moral commitment" so far.

Remember it is ONE of the iSPs so we still have to have prices to compare. Have to agree, that 4Mbps is so good :).

700 is rather small as i would've expected a little over 50 percent. Surely you can get some perks having fibre like free local calls, IPTV, CCTV all in a neat package?

Hope some residents visit the forum alot :p.

Is it an open network or are you locked to an ISP?

Massive risk to an ISP going in there as well, so contracts make sense. It's open, but that doesn't preclude an ISP from introducing its own contract model.

National and international need to still be provisioned and paid for, and there's a very real cost to access to the ISP as well, so IPC is simple replaced in this model, and there are other costs involved as well which are not insignificant. Although it's still a great opportunity, don't get me wrong.

I'm not at liberty to go into any details, but the "perks" mentioned are certainly available. But nothing comes free in this world.

I don't read it as being an open network. Vumatel have partnered with a few ISPs.... in other words the customer cannot choose ANY ISP of their choice.

/herp derp - i wasn't thinking that far along. :o thanks for pointing that out.

No, it certainly is an open model, but you're right in that not all ISPs currently (or in the future) will have access. Not all ISPs are willing to take the risk though to invest heavily for a small piece of a 700 customer base pie, even on high ARPUs, which in themselves are a bit of a barrier.

The technical side is another discussion as well in terms of actual provisioning and management.

So if I as a Parkhurst resident currently use Crystal Web for my ISP and DSL rental, I have a problem?

Only if you choose to use the fibre connection. If not and you remain on DSL then you're fine...unless...Telkom change things on their side.

Or am I missing something? E.g. some residents are lucky enough to have existing DSL service and can continue using them?

Edit: missed CW's last post...
