Is this a good deal

It seems like a good deal. Those lenses are the most basic ones you get. Nice starter kit.

It isn't just the lack of IS, its just such an ancient design the image quality is pretty bad compared to more modern lenses.

If you want something in that range the 55-250mm EF-S is pretty decent for the money, and the EF 70-300mm is also pretty decent and compatible with full-frame if that's something you feel like you should consider.

Hi All
Kalahari has the Canon 1200d Twin Lens for R4500.
As a beginner looking at a DSLR for the first time (i don't intend becoming a professional) taking pics of family and scenery, would anyone recommend it?
Vs the Nikon D3200 which will cost more (maybe there will be better specials closer to the festive period).

Amazon does not have such bad reviews of that lens and the Canon does have AF.

Looking at the price difference and needs I would go with the 1200D.

I've got one as well and for a budget dslr, I am mighty impressed. The only real downside is the LCD resolution.

It's not terrible, but that 75-300mm lens is widely held to be the absolute worst lens Canon still sells.

Not at all - EF 75-300 non IS is still a good lens . 'Tis the porridge between the ears that makes a lens work well , not the specs on the kit.

No, the lens is pretty rubbish. It's soft at 75mm and gets softer still as it extends to 300mm. The chromatic abberation is pretty damn wild. The focusing speed is OK I guess. Vignetting isn't bad, which is surprising. The build quality is non-existent, worse than the 18-55 kit lens. There are times where no matter how good the porridge between the ears, getting quality just isn't possible. For the price is it great though, although for that price I'll sell you my 55-250mm IS II and give you some change :D

THAT BEING SAID you don't always want perfect images. Sometimes you want a Rembrandt, sometimes you want a Picasso.

55 -250 on a 500d also does the trick

I see with the release of the Canon 7D II, orms has slashed the price on the previous model. Quite tempting I must say.

I see it is listed for R12700 body only --- I remember Dion Wired (or was that Game?) selling the body-only for R13k about 2 years back one some special. Given the release of the 7DII, I say they should drop the price to R10k (based purely on wishful thinking).

Anyhow, the 7D is still a good choice (despite its age) if you plan to go the Canon route. You will not get cutting-edge image quality, but you will get a body with very good handling.

Phew - I got that when I sold my 7D a few months back :D

The 7D is still a very capable camera.

Anyone see the takealot daily deal on the Sony HX300. I am literally pulling my hair out.

I heard so, I only checked in around 930. Would've made my pops a happy person on xmas.

Oh well hopefully it's just a sign of more great deals to come :fingerscrossed:

I suspect it was an error - even at double that price it would have sold out very quickly. Fortunately I was 1 of the lucky ones that managed to snag 1 at R999.
