External Log Periodic Dipole Antenna from Poynting~Oh yes!!!

This ,I felt, deserves its own thread.
I have had a data card for almost 15months now.I'm officially just out of the official coverage area in Rynfield,Benoni..
This showed as Ive put up with 1 and occasionally 2 bars coverage signal here.As you can imagine, dropped connections, very slow downloads etc,etc..

I placed an order with Vodacom at Vodaworld ...mmmmm..lets see..A YEAR AGO for an antenna..I must say,my mate Carel has done his utmost to arrange this for me.
Anyhow,I Googled hsdpa and came up with a company called Poynting and they are in Wynberg,Jhb.
I placed my order via e-mail on Tuesday and received the LPDA-A001 Yagi antenna today.
I stuck it up on the roof earlier and pointed it in the general direction of the O`Reilly Merry tower.

WOW!! A full 4 bars signal strength first time out!And thats with 10m of cable!
I am very impressed with this product!
Thats from 1 ,occasionally 2 bars..!

The total cost was R811.78 and imo,the best money Ive spent this year..
Brilliant.!!

I'm unashamed in promoting Poynting for their product and they can be contacted at Annelise.nel(at)poynting.co.za

You will totally enjoy your wireless again.

A similar antenna is available from Space TV branches around the country and also works very well. Price is under R500 including antenna, cbale and pigtail.

Re: External Yagi Antenna - Poynting

Cell C is currently offering the LPDA yagi antenna from Poynting free of charge, including installation to all our data contract subscribers.

They are great antennas. You'll notice in the FAQ (in this Vodacom sub-forum) that there is a link to to Poynting and their antennas for about 2 years now! :)

V3g,I just did the ol db gain field strength test...a figure of 19-75Db..Im impressed!

WOW, cool! I reckon I'm going to get me one. I'm also just outside of the official coverage area, living in D'Urbanvale in the WC. Can anyone tell me where the tower is closest to me?

By the way, the ultimate test! Hows the download experience now? I also get 2-4 bars but my download experience still sux a bit. Do tell!

Cool, got any more info about this?

D,Id suggest if your looking at an external antenna,Go go big,go best and go with the highest gain antenna..
I looked at 6dB,8dB but decided on the 11 dB gain antenna.
If I could afford the 22 dB omni I would have.Overkill possibly, but that me.
I can now say that Ive swung the Yagi a few degrees and I now have a full 5 bars reception.Ive only ever seen that at the T junction below the runway at OR Tambo airport while driving with the laptop.ever!.

I am extremely happy with this antenna.
As for download speeds, the connections are now almost instantaneous and downloads happen quickly as well..
Downloads are faster but are dependent on the connected server or download server.Overall?? Yes,its all quicker and faster.
For the first time Im enjoying wireless..

As a test I did the signal strength test with the little clip on antenna as well.

Clip on -figure of 8-97dBm
Yagi -figure of 19-75dBm

What more can I say?

Brad,Im sure the other antenna`s are just as good.I can only give feedback on this particular one.
Perhaps you can tell us more on the others out there??

Only got a pdf with more info - PM me an email address and I will email it to you. It is also an 11dBi antenna which covers GPRS and 3G and comes in a kit complete with antenna, 10m cable and pigtail for datacard.

I know Im harping on about this...BUT...Im chuffed!
Its such a pleasure again...

LPDA, not Yagi

Hi guys,

The LPDA-A0021 from Poynting is a Log Periodic Dipole Antenna (LPDA), it is not a yagi. The LPDA is a wide band antenna where as the YAGI is normally a relatively narrowband antenna. There are some other fundemental differences as well, but I will spare you the boring details.

Just thought you should know.

Regards,

JJF.

Don't be ashamed promoting something to help people get better coverage :)

I have a 3G Booster (Etsa) issued to me by Vodacom shortly after 3G became available ... thats already 2 years (or more) ago. I also then jumped from 1bar to 4bars with the booster. I then relocated, took the booster and antenna with me, reinstalled it myself, pointed it in the general direction and again jumped my signal from 1bar (sometimes zero) to 3/4bars and ever since have reliable and mostly very fast access.

I don't think Vodacom will just hand them out anymore, but since they first came out they have become really cheap. <R900 is a steal if you think about it and it will probably work with all carriers so it would be a good investment imho for anyone with less than 2 bars signal strength.

Also keep in mind that the more users there are on your tower the more the signal drops. Mine has dropped from 4-bars to 3-bars about 2 months ago due to more users signing up in my area but connectivity is still good. A big development got recently approved in my area so I am expecting signal loss with all the contractors, engineers, consultants etc who will be frequenting the area ...... time will tell !!!
