Digital TV migration policy out next week

"South African Post Office (SAPO) is expected to implement plans to distribute the STBs"....:D

Control of STB's are retarded! My TV can receive and display digital signal but now I need an STB to do something my TV can already do and probably do it better.

But then there won't be content wort watching...

But it can display digital broadcast which is not encrypted

My only question is will we no longer need a tv license if we opt NOT to get these boxes?

Nope. Anything acapable of receiving TV broadcast signal requires TV licence. Key point is a presence of the antenna and TV receiver. TV card for PC included. Internet wired/wireless connection not included (unless they have updated things).

You'll need to decrypt the signal once they scramble the signal. TV licence as well? yes.

Exactly, that is the case right now.

But when they go digital the analog signal will not be available so my TV will not be capable of receiving the broadcast signal.

As such I should therefore no longer require a license unless I purchase the digital box.

Correct, but analog signal will be still available for couple years. You don't have to wait for that moment. If you use your TV set exclusively as a display for media server content, you can disable RF receiver in TV set and stop paying license. Expect dudes knocking your door, but the same can happen after they switch off analog signal, as stopping paying license is a trigger.

Yeah I've read about the denaturing story but it seems like more effort than just paying it.
