The Datsun GO, launched in South Africa in October 2014, will from July be available with an OPTIONAL driver’s-side crash bag.

This was confirmed to Wheels24 by the global head of Datsun, Vincent Cobee, while on a lightning visit to South Africa recently.

He stated that from the middle of 2015 the bag would be an EXTRA-COST OPTION in the GO Lux model.

The price had not been finalised, but such a unit, he said, usually added about R3,000 to a purchase price.

This announcement follows stiff criticism of the new vehicle after the GO, an entry-level hatchback, was released in South Africa WITHOUT crash-bag protection or anti-lock brakes.

Worse, soon after its local launch, the GO also failed the Global NCAP- and UN endorsed crash test procedures, and in a recent development Global NCAP has called on motor manufacturers to “democratise safety for all cars worldwide by 2020”.

In a study by Global NCAP released mid-March 2015, it was revealed that millions of new cars sold in middle and low-income countries, would fail the UN’s basic safety standards for front and side impacts.

Is it really going to make any difference anyway?
 
Crash bag sounds like what they zip your corpse up in after you accidentally bump another car.
 
Looking at the crash tests, don't really see what difference an airbag, or "crash bag", is going to make...

Thats pretty much whats needed for the GO!... airbags won't make a stitch of difference if you ask me.

The fitting of the 'optional' airbag to the Datsun GO will make as much difference to the fatal outcome of a crash, as the fitting of a driver airbag did for the last versions of the VW CitiGolf.

The main problem for the Datsun GO, which has been entirely overlooked (or ignored by Nissan), is the fundamental & complete FAILURE of the bodyshell to either absorb or distribute the crash impact loads, leading to the vehicle structure crumpling in such a manner to make the collision a fatal outcome for the hapless occupants!

Global NCAP Chairman Max Mosley has now written to Nissan Chairman and CEO, Carlos Ghosn, calling for an urgent withdrawal of the Datsun Go from the Indian and related markets.

Max Mosley, Global NCAP Chairman said:

“It is extremely disappointing that Nissan has authorised the launch of a brand new model, that is so clearly sub-standard."

"As presently engineered, the Datsun Go will certainly fail to pass the United Nation’s frontal impact regulation. In these circumstances I would urge Nissan to withdraw the Datsun Go from sale in India, pending an urgent redesign of the car’s body-shell."

"Applying the UN’s minimum crash test standards to all passenger car production worldwide is a key recommendation of the Global Plan for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety."

“Given Carlos Ghosn’s responsibilities as Chairman and CEO of Nissan and President of the European Car Manufacturers Association, he should now demonstrate leadership both in Nissan and on behalf of the vehicle industry generally, that corresponds to the UN’s legitimate expectation that automobile safety should be improved during the Decade of Action.”

Yeah, didn't that original report say that an airbag would make no difference due to the massive deformation of the car. I would recommend that everyone stay away from this car. Unless you are crashing into it.... Then it should make for a nice soft impact

Airbag will take up all the space left in the cabin when it folds up like a concertina.
 
Apparently the aim of the airbag is to prevent the impression of the Datsun badge on your forehead, could be a rumor..
 
Useless, structural integrity is flawed. Airbag will help you eff-all. Fitting ABS as standard might help a bit more, you know, to keep you from crashing into things.

Good point, I will keep that in mind. If I plan to crash into another car, a Datsun will be my first choice, followed by a Fiat 500, mainly because it is ugly, and preferably a baby blue one
 
This is a marketing disaster in the making. From what I could see of the tests, if you ever get t-boned in that car, regardless of airbags, you are a dead person.

I think hitting a bug at 120kph would also be fatal in the Datsun GO.

At least it doesnt explode with the smallest impact, like a ford pinto

I suppose you say thats progress, now it crumples like a flake, unfortunantly you have to be inside it,

Wonder if with a bit of strengthening and reworking it could be made safer.
