Naspers’ new Netflix competitor is called Showmax

I'll be open to it but not expecting much until I see it. It's all in the price and the number of titles

The domain showmax.co.za is registered to Naspers, with a postal address listed in Grand Baie, Mauritius, while showmax.com is registered to Naspers at an address in Hong Kong, via its subsidiary MIH

Lots of tax avoidance there

I guess one would need an active PVR subscription as well in order to sign up for this service :erm:

This when Naspers plays regulatory terms with the on demand competition. How many viable startups they sidetracked to enhance content delivery in SA... You know, Naspers is all about good business...

They are very outspoken on tax avoidance. I believe there was a article on MyB/BTech covering this, can't remember.

A UAE based company developing its own content - sounds amazing! :erm:

I'm happy , this is going to going to force Netflix to fast track their plans to expand in developing markets

Curious to see if this will fall under Multichoice or Naspers going forward.

Great development though

Pretty much all depends on content and price to me...

They would be able to bring a game changer to the market if they could stream sports as well tbh.

The price point is what will be a deciding factor, together with platform support and feature available on the supported platforms (HD, DD5.1, etc). For ease of use it is very very difficult to beat a Netflix+Unotelly subscription. The Unotelly+Filmefy partnership streamlines the cross-region features for Netflix even more.

Sport, especially "premium" sport? That will add at least R300 to the Showmax Sub.

From what I know they will fall under Naspers but be allowed to share content with Multichoice. Also i think is a great option to be based in Dubai. This way they also do not have all the regulations of BEE and compliance which is rampant.

However I bet that due to the quality of the company, the exciting new technology and as they will select management based on merit they will probably have the most racially diverse team ever. Should be an interesting study....

I highly doubt BEE even entered their thoughts when it came to this. In my experience, when it comes to having different divisions/teams in different countries, it comes down to where the people are (from previous acquisitions). And then of course, there are tax considerations. I've been involved in a similar situation where you have development teams (subsidiaries) in Cape Town, Hong Kong, Poland and London. Each for the simple reason that at some point, an acquisition occurred in each

No app on Game Console or Media Player then no thank you. I will give it a try if they have an app and the he price is cheaper or equal than my US Netflix + Unotely setup.

They can have free unlimited porn to entice people to this BS service, I'd much rather give my money to a company that isn't politically motivated

Its a step in the right direction yes, but of course the content needs to be worked on... the stuff that Icflix offer REALLY doesn't appeal to me.

You will struggle to give your money to any company then...
