Hey everyone. I just spotted this on Takealot as part of their Daily Deals and I wanted to know what is everyone's thoughts on this. I am currently using a Belkin 150Mbps router that is currently serving me well but I am keen to maybe try out something else to see if I can get an even better Internet experience.

Best 300mbps ADSL Router on the market. Don't take my word for it, try it out for yourself.

Takes 30 seconds to setup. Range is better than any 2x2 DSL Router. USB Port for file sharing, printer sharing and 3G failover. Industry leading graphic user interface that allows you to do much more than other products in this price range.

Most importantly... 3 Year Warranty.

Gee, I don't know ASUS_SA, should we take your word that ASUS products are great?

What about the firmware that doesn't get patched/takes forever to get patched:

Actually, we've managed to patch up all security flaws with our newer firmwares. They get updated at least once every two months.

Version*3.0.0.4.378.3885
ASUS RT-AC87U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.378.3885
- Fixed infosvr security issue.
- Fixed media server related issues
- Fixed 3G/4G USB dongle related issues.
- Fixed dual wan related issues.
- Improved UDP throughput between LAN and WAN.

If you still somehow have concerns, Asuswrt-Merlin is the way to go. Thank God we live in a world where options are available.

2 year with Takealot, while Asus covers the 3rd year possibly

I haven't been on these forums in years, however I had to sign in to add my 2c.

I have a DSL-N12U router. At first, I was pretty impressed with it, until I realized that all the horrible lag I was getting while gaming was caused by the router's built in DSL modem. Horrible, horrible latency. Doing a traceroute would get timeouts on first hop after the router. At first, I blamed the exchange, but many logged tickets with Telkom and them not finding anything wrong led me to plug in my old router. No issues. Brilliant connection, everything peachy. Plug the Asus back in, horrible lag. Eventually I bought a cheapy d-link basic modem, and used that in bridge mode with the Asus router, as the wireless on the router is great.

I've also managed to DDOS the router with the star citizen patcher. If I leave the patcher at default settings (unlimited bandwidth), the router stops responding. It's a very bizarre issue. Kill the patcher, the router may start responding again, but otherwise I have to reboot it. If I change the patcher settings to about ~100kb/s then it's fine and the router is happy. This was a few weeks ago.

Everything has been fine since then until today, where I had a download going at full line speed (10mbit), and the router stopped responding again, and I had to reboot it.

I think the particular router I have is a lemon, as most people I've spoken to have had nothing but good things to say about Asus routers.

The only other annoyance with it, is that it wants a reboot for every bloody setting change.. and it's not a fast booter.

Hi there,

As of 2015 standard warranty on ASUS networking is 3 years. We will speak to Takealot and ask them to update the information.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Hi thisgeek,

Sorry about the troubles you've gone through on your device. If I may ask, when was the last time you did a firmware update? Perhaps the latest firmware may solve the issue.

I bought one of these last week - and it has been working well.

DSL speeds seem good - and the wifi coverage is pretty good as well.

I'm having an issue with my DSL-N14U since fridday, not exactly sure what's happening but the DSL driver component seems to be failing,so it fails to Init/Sync to the ADSL line, factory reset fixes the issue for a while but it's happened twice this weekend
Firmware 1.0.9.9

Just got the router/modem today from takealot. Want to keep my existing modem/router and use this as a range extender, but connect ether net to it and have a second AP.. Seems impossible, marketing on the product page is misleading.. Has anyone managed to do this?

I have this router in my cart ready to purchase. Would you guys say its worth it? Everything I have read say it's really good, and I need one by month end. This router ticks all the boxes too.

Try the new firmware: https://www.asus.com/Networking/DSLN14U/HelpDesk_Download/

What plug does it use - 2 or 3 prong? I need a surge protector too and an ADSL line protector.

@ASUS_SA What is the latest version of AsusWRT that works well (and is super stable) on the DSL-N14U? If I buy one, I will definitely be flashing it. Also, as far as I know, Asuswrt-Merlin doesn't work on the N14 series, as of a couple months now? Please confirm :)
