M-Net in the early hours of Saturday morning confirmed that Gareth Cliff would no longer be part of the Idols SA judging panel.

It comes after Gareth was embroiled in controversy regarding a race debate around estate agent, Penny Sparrow. Responding to questions on whether to criminalise racist posts on social media, Gareth Cliff said: "People really don't understand free speech at all."

Twitter lashed out at Gareth, with calls to boycott Idols. Gareth apologised and later released a blog post asking for constructive engagement.

M-net on Thursday said that it would be reviewing his future work on the show. And in the early hours of this morning this statement was released confirming that he would no longer be part of the judging panel.

M-Net announced today (Friday, 8 Jan) that Gareth Cliff will not be part of the judging panel for Idols SA Season 12, which is due to commence with countrywide auditions at the end of January 2016.M-Net thanks Cliff for the critical role he has played in seeking out and developing new talent over the years and for contributing to the success of the show to date.Idols SA Season 12 will be screened on M-Net’s Local Interest channel Mzansi Magic which is available to both DStv Premium and DStv Compact viewers.

Gareth Cliff is an idiot. He shouldn't have gotten fired but, he is a world class idiot. Anyway, who watches idols?

OK, I'll admit that I did not follow the Gareth Cliff incident.

Can somebody please update me? What was his crime?

So M-net dismissed him for defending free speech? This country is ****ed.

Would love to see a transcript of exactly what he said, but on the face of this report I have to agree we're basically screwed. We're at the point were there is no room for constructive discussion around this matter, absolutely no room for debate. Without that we've got zero chances of moving forward in this country with regards to race relations.

so which country in your mind has moved forward with race relations? The US, what about countries in the EU, Australia? please show me...

I'll have milk with my coffee, I don't like coffee without milk - this is where we're headed. Careful what you say, don't what anyone to overhear you saying you 'don't like black coffee', they may only hear 'don't like black' and you'll end up in cell

Depends on your perspective I suppose. Are you looking at the last few years or the say the last 300 years.

your comment was made within a specific context of time, so you figure it out

His response is actually quite good, didn't expect that from him, struck me as a loose cannon before.

I think he's a calculated loose cannon tbh... just he gets his timing wrong sometimes and it blows up in his face.

From a quick search (and correct me if I'm wrong, please) it would appear that this is the initial tweet that started it all:
