After spending a total of +- 2 hours on the phone with Telkom and MWEB trying to get my ADSL line transferred to MWEB the last person I spoke to in the Telkom call center told me that they need to allocate the line the the infamous "Wholesale holding pool" before MWEB can take ownership of the ADSL line (I can just see the pool full of ADSL lines swimming and waiting for another ISP to fish it out.) but they can not do it (sigh) as it is done by the back office.

So I sent an email to the following address [email protected] asking them if they can please assist me(this email address was given to me by the last person I spoke to in the Telkom call center)

I am frustrated as I signed up at Telkom over the previous weekend, I asked the gentlemen in the store I only need the line installed that is ADSL enabled and that I will contact MWEB for the ADSL line rental. Apparently this was too much information as I ended up with a call plan and a 2mb line rental from Telkom – eish. Now I need to transfer the ADSL line to MWEB (the ADSL line should never have ended up at Telkom)

So my question is, is this the only/correct way of transferring the line to MWEB?

Nope, phone MWEB, let them take care of the migration. I did the same and never ever had to speak to a Telkom individual at all. BUT, you do realise that you are looking at +30 days of downtime while the migration takes place?

Always leave your line with Telkom.

but... but... but... MWEB ???????

:p

I wouldn't doubt their ability as far as managing lines goes. Instant answering of calls, and prompt replies on MyBb/social media, with many tools at their disposal to manage lines, though I'm sure other ISPs are the same. So I have no doubt that issues would be resolved quickly.

By all means use MWEB as the ISP, one can't go wrong there. But for the customer's sake, we all know it's best to leave the line with Telkom. Reporting issues directly to Telkom without going through a middleman tends to be better, with faster resolution. There is also no downtime if changing lines to another ISP, though I doubt most people would after using MWEB.

The potential headaches having lines with ISPs can cause, are simply not worth the small monthly saving.

Hi tjara, PM me your MWEB details and I will be able to arrange for your ADSL line to be migrated to us.

When it comes to line migration, there can be downtime of 10 - 15 working days

Anyone knows if there is any downtime when doing the reverse?

Looking at moving a client's line back to Telkom from MWEB.

Just got off the phone with Mweb Sales before reading this. I guess they forgot to mention the 2 week downtime.

Very few people would be willing to be without Internet for 2 weeks. This new info has caused me to rather stay put with Telkom.

Very good decision :)

Agreed. Rather let MWEB handle just the ISP part.

Very wise idea.

Especially if you also have a fixed telephone line.

Have no idea why anyone wants to complicate their lives like this.

I wonder if those that posted here would let us know why they are moving in the first place? ( either way)

I plan to move my line away from MWeb back to Telkom. Telkom call centre just told me over the phone that it will take up to 7 working days, so 7 days of downtime.

Regarding downtime, is that still true?

I've heard that your line gets placed in a "holding pool" for 5 days and that you should request a transfer within those 5 days.

Telkom telephone line R199 per month

One cannot physically move your ADSL data line from Telkom to another ISP (Internet Service Provider). It’s your telephone line, a copper wire, it belongs to Telkom.

You still have to pay Telkom R199 a month for your telephone line, no matter who your ISP is.

My Telkom ADSL 4 mbps 40GB cap costs me R559 a month. That includes Night Owl uncap 12 to 7 AM. Actually Telkom ADSL costs R360 + telephone line R199 = R559.

For similar ADSL packages …
Vox Telecom would cost me R398 + R199 = R597.
Axxess would cost me R435 + R199 = R634.
OpenWeb would cost me R444 + R199 = R643.
MWEB would cost me R445 + R199 = R644.
ignite would cost me R548 + R199 = R747.

ADSL means Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. That means the copper wire is divided into different size channels … asymmetrically. A big channel for downloading data, a small channel for uploading data, and another channel for voice calls.

I have a 4 mbps (mega bit per second) ADSL line (inside my telephone line) which is 1,8 gBph (giga byte per hour). But my speed is not 4 mbps, it’s only 3,4 mbps because I’m 500 meters away from the microwave towers. The resistance in the copper wire, reduces my speed. ADSL will only work if you’ve got less than 3 km of copper wire. 3 km is already too far, the resistance kills the internet signal.

My 3,4 mbps is 1,5 gBph. Theoretically I should be able to download a movie of 1,5 GB in 60 minutes. Sometimes it works, usually it takes longer than 60 minutes.

The copper wire restricts me to 4 mbps (3,4 mbps). I cannot get 10 mbps or 100 mbps, for that one needs fibre optics, which is not available where I stay. A friend of mine has 100 mbps fibre optics. The actual speed is 90 mbps. Theoretically he can download a 1,5 GB movie in 2 minutes 17 seconds. But it takes longer, there are too many bottle necks in the internet. Nonetheless, fibre optics are awesome!
