DStv vs Uncapped ADSL with Netflix – prices compared

In this day and age I'm pretty sure most premium DSTV users are already paying for an Internet connection and phone line also.So poor comparison.

You don't need uncapped. A 200GB capped package for R299 from the friendly folk at WebAfrica should be good enough. So you can dock R100 off that price. They then give you pretty much uncapped night owl browsing for those movie marathons into the wee hours of the morning.

is a 4mbps line fast enough for hd streaming?

Yes, i used to get 720p . Buy your line needs to be syncing at the highest possible speed & you gotta have a good ISP (i was with CW)

Advantages: Over 130 TV channels, excellent live sport coverage, DStv Catch Up, Livestream Supersport, DStv Now, multiple viewing environments.

Now i see why i cancelled my premium sub. I don't see any advantages in all those listed . Internet entertainment ftw!

You cannot add the price of adsl+line as that's a given and was around long before Netflix was even thought of, so in real terms it's R158 versus R844.

Its kinda of ridiculous to compare the 2 because I am not only watching Netflix. I can watch YouTube or Twitch plus other streaming services plus I can game online and browse the net and do the social meadia thing all on the line.
DSTV is just DSTV with repeats every 6 hours. so you really only get a 1/4 of the content available to you on netfilx. Plus you need to pay extra for boxoffice.

Then of course there's the obvious advantage of Netflix.
You never heard anyone say lets DSTV and Chill

Right, I had DSL 4 Mbps as well as DSTV. Very easy just cancelled my DSTV and bought a bigger cap package which cost me about R50 more. Maths tells me I am saving R800 per month. Done.

So much for being tech news, pffft...

Relax boys (persons?) These are the hard facts. Everyone's internet use differs. You cannot have a comprehensive comparison without detail interviews with a representative sample of consumers.

For a person like myself who rarely watches anything in HD, I suppose a 1mbps uncapped line will also work with Netflix. me, the wife and my daughter each streamed from netflix at our old home and we each used about 700k to 1.1mbps per stream with reasonable SD quality (we were on a 4mbps CW package). So for one person living alone who does not game or download the internet, 1mbps should work.

They are not taking into account the sh*t and repeats they show on DSTV. With Netflix you can watch what you want and when you want it. Besides, for everything, including uncapped fibre + netflix ours comes to R357.00 per month. Suck on that DSTV.
