Elitehost down?

Their upstream provider is currently the target of a DoS attack.

Status: http://status.elitehost.co.za/

Update: It appears that the attack has been mitigated. More than half of the servers/services were affected and offline, but they appear to be online now. Check Twitter for updates: https://twitter.com/elitehostcoza

Mitigated now? Seems stable...

Thank you for patience, the network has been stabilised, please let us know if you run into any further issues.

thx guys.

* im really impressed with Elitehost. support is awesome.

It appears the DDoS attack has continued. All sh*, rs* and cp* (except UK) servers cannot be reached at this point. Servers omega, atlantis, agena, and carina are not being affected by the attack.

Update: Appears to be back up - seems intermittent...

Unfortunately the attack started again this morning, we can confirm that both our primary name server hosted in Johannesburg and secondary name server hosted in Los Angeles USA were targetted. The attack traffic was over 10Gbit/sec but seems to have stopped now. We still have some null routes in place and are monitoring the network closely.

It affected the Hetzner network as well and CloudFlare is also reporting network issues in Johannesburg. We do not have any further information but it seems like there were a few local targets of this attack.

And down again... Phew, these attacks are getting hectic now. Email throughput is taking forever as well.

All seems to have stabilised [for the day]*.

* I'd thought this would not happen again when it finished yesterday. I was so wrong.

I feel for you man, we got targeted last weekend, they seem to have it in for the South African providers lately.

Good luck and hopefully it goes away soon.

If need any help, drop me a PM and i'll let you know some of the mitigate stuff we put in place which might help.

What is the big idea with attacking providers? I mean, to what end... what are these guys gaining by ddosing providers? Are they doing it for kicks? Ok, so I guess none of us are specialists in cracker psychology, but I want to hear - is there anything they can gain from this activity?
