Mybb please do an article on the recent DDoSing of SA sites.

Is it anonymous?

There is such devices that handle DDoS mitigation, any serious hosting provider has it.

If your provider does not, may be time to look elsewhere.

Wow.. this is a really cheap shot comment right here and I'm glad you are not running my IT.

DDoS mitigation devices do help to a certain extent, but in volumetric attacks like a DNS or NTP amplification attack, it doesn't matter what DDoS mitigation device you have. If you have a 10Gbit connection and the attack size is 100Gbit/sec, they still going to saturate your link, regardless of what DDoS mitigation you have on premise.

It also depends on where the hosting provider is in the network chain.
For example, does the ISP own their own BGP and AS number and simply buy IP transit or are they buying full network connectivity from another provider. If they own their own BGP/AS then they can use services like Akamai, Incapsula, Psychz, Arbor, etc who provide DDoS protection by having infrastructure all over the world so a 100Gbit/sec volumetric attack gets distributed between 10 different scrubbing centers each only dealing with 10Gbit/sec of the traffic. These solutions however are extremely expensive and cost more than most South African hosting providers can afford. If a hosting provider is buying full network connectivity from another provider, then they can't make the decision to go with a solution like this.

Unfortunately I don't believe you have all the facts to make such a carelessly broad statement like this. I know from past experience, Elitehost uses EOH as their provider and EOH uses Arbor Peakflows for their DDoS protection. What we don't know is the size of the attack, the attack type or what is being targeted or if EOH is just null routing because it's the easiest thing to do.

Aren't you the cocky one.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your patience.

We are currently experiencing network connectivity issues, the attack continues.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused, we are working to get services restored.

@Elitehost: I see the new Status.io page is up. Will you ever be restoring the functionality that Icinga provided, perhaps at status2.elitehost.co.za? The detail that monitoring system gave was awesome...

Edit: It appears to be up and down. Saw it a minute ago, and now it's fallen back to the 'coming soon' page...

Hey when will this be resolved ? My clients are going crazy, please assist asap. Much appreciatted

Hosting provider won't be able to know when this will be resolved. It's either 'find a way to mitigate' (which is not easy at all) or 'wait for the attacks to stop'. Elite can't do anything more than they have at this point, I'm afraid...

Update: The DDoS attacks appear to have subsided. We are marking this incident as resolved now. We will continue monitoring closely for any further issues. Thank you all for your patience and understand during this time.

Must admit I am a bit disappointed in the lack of communication from elitehost this time.

We have been keeping our Facebook and Twitter accounts updated as well as launching a new status service yesterday.
