Telkom testing migration of mobile Internet traffic to Telkom Internet

Can someone explain if this is a good thing or bad thing?

Will it result in cheaper LTE data? Or shared ADSL data?

I stand to be corrected but as far as I know the Mobile network is managed by Huawei. If it gets migrated to Telkom Fixed ISP it would use the same backbone that adsl and fibre use and would have more capacity for cheaper and as mentioned better peering.

That is what I could have gathered from Greg.

Please do not confuse exchange/dslam congestion with the the fixed ISP backbone.
 
This could be a solution to cost and stability but not tower side congestion as radio resources is still limited it would merely mitigate backhaul congestion and peering issue and could reduce those costs.....
 
I hope this doesn't result in Telkom Internet being slow... I remember that time where line speeds were getting bumped up and Telkom Internet was slow :D
 
Don't think so. My TelkomMobile IP still traceroutes via SAIX's network and not the new ASN for TelkomSA's network which they already use for DSL/FTTH.

im seeing this on a tracert ipc-aggr-2.east.dsl.telkomsa.net befoe it was always 8ta.
 
Maybe it depends on the area you are in. You are in KZN while I am in CTN, maybe its only partially rolled out.

I think they're in the process of the migration, and so far its not going as smoothly as it should I think.

Yes looks like Telkom has migrated KZN LTE users to their KZN IPC. The route for LTE is now the same as Fibre and ADSL via Telkom ISP IPC in Durban......

Previously it routed through huawei on the 172.xxx range to JHB and then on the 8ta network. I also notice that Vox VOIP sip server no longer get's routed to international and back it goes direct.

Currently yeha, the network is as unstable as all hell...

Unless Telkom catered for the high speed you can imagine how fast the IPC will get filled considering ALL Telkom LTE, Telkom ISP ADSL, Telkom ISP Fibre in KZN will go through this IPC.

I suspect we will see congestion if they do not have enough capacity. We know what happened to Afrihost when they did not have enough IPC and it started getting congested.

@Ranger would be better off maybe giving us an indication of how the IPC traffic is looking like.

We have seen very few complaints, and all testing is showing adequate results, or improvements in some cases. Can you provide specific examples?

So it's not actually using any IPC capacity, but it is using infrastructure that we put in for the Durban POP that at the time only served IPC.

Time to update some reverse DNS I guess.

We installed additional transit capacity for Telkom Mobile, and they are using less than the additional capacity we installed for them; the remainder is available for other customers (e.g. DSL).

So, we ordered IPC upgrades long before this initiative came about anyway, but the delivery of the new IPC capacity isn't 100% complete. The build work was completed just in time for the change freeze, but Openserve still needs to do some configuration before we can make this capacity available.

Can you provide some examples? A traceroute to an affected site might help.

I have been finding https sites can be reached via a traceroute but will not load in the browser. examples https://www.cellc.co.za/ https://techcrunch.com/ - This site can’t be reached

techcrunch.com took too long to respond.

Often a restart of the router fixes it - maybe due to a change in assigned ip address range - just off the top of my head 41... has issues but 196... seems to work fine.

Usually I find access to the most random of sites gets sketchy for a period...

Currently though, it all seems good. If I have issues I will take screenshots and post directly in this thread.
