Most of the time, which OEM you choose to buy a GPU from isn’t seen as having a huge impact on the performance of the card, though added value and included goodies often vary between manufacturers. Every now and then, however, design differences between companies do play out in a more significant way, and that may be what has happened to EVGA and its GTX 1080 and 1070 lineups. Reports from Reddit and the EVGA forums suggest that a number of cards have failed catastrophically and in high-profile fashion.

Hot Hardware reported on one Reddit user, Mydst, who saw his card flame out while he was using it, and he’s not alone. Sharp-eyed readers on the EVGA forums have pointed to a Tom’s Hardware Guide review, which picked up VRM (voltage regulator modules) temperatures exceeding 106C during stress loading. That’s significantly hotter than the GPU itself.

It seems that nowadays if you want the latest tech you need to buy fire extinguishers with them.

Anybody think there is a market for fire detection and prevention PC cases :crylaugh:

I've learned to stay away from EVGA, always had some kind of technical issue with their products in the past like overheating and coil whine.

These issues have been reported a long time ago, but only came to light (or seriousness) when it was captured on video. As I understand the issue is not limited to the EVGA, but are more likely to occur on the EVGA FTW editions.

Its a bull**** fix

It's only one part of a fix.

Register your gpu online with evga and get them to send you some thermal pads. Alternatively return your gpu for another one that has the fix applied.

It applies to all the evga cards using the ACX 3.0 cooler.

So seeing as EVGA is (to put it mildly) rubbish... What would you recommend? Galax?
