Windows 10 gaining desktop market share

It was free, one would expected more...

Not that I took up their offer. I'd rather use 8.1 if given the choice only between those 2 OSes...
 
Had Windows 10 completely taking 90% market share 1.5 years ago when it was released that would have been MASSIVE news.

Considering virtually all new machines come with Windows 10 it would be kinda obvious that Windows 10 is gaining market share but it says a lot about the product and users trust/faith in Microsoft products it it has taken this long...

And that's it was FREE for a year and kept telling you it is free, over and over and over...
 
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 definitely the best. :)

The whole lack of control regarding updates still pisses me off.
I have a rarely used work laptop. Every time I connect it to my WiFi hotshot, it tries to download a crap load of updates and kills a good amount of data.

Put the laptop on CBB (current branch for business)

Open up Settings
Select Update & Security
Under Windows Update select Advanced options
Check Defer upgrades

The bloody thing clings to you like a virus constantly sending and receiving god knows what. Win 7 and Mint 18 for me.

There is a way around that, I have mine setup to only notify me that updates are available, you click on the notification and then it lists all the updates and you have to manually click the download button to download & install the updates just like in the past with older windows versions. Requires no addition software and is a simple windows config thing.

I don't think it works with home edition, I'm not sure but try it anyway. Updates are now a non-issue for me as I choose when to download & install them & I hated the automated thing.

Windows 10 - receiving (using) data in the background

I now have 2 laptops on Windows 10 Home - the one, a newly purchased Dell (Black Friday), and the other, a Lenovo that had Win 8.1 on it. In both cases, I'd done fresh Win 10 ISO installs of the Anniversary Update, so there are no Dell or Lenovo apps on the machines ***

Last night, I decided to check for updates. As soon as I turned on each laptop, I noticed that the data started 'flowing'. As it turned out, the Dell received about 530MB of (background) data, and the Lenovo around 750MB.

Independently checking for updates, all there was for each machine was a minor amount for Windows Defender since the last time I checked a few days prior .. nothing else was available, and everything was up-to-date.

I have both machines set to Defer Upgrades & both are used via wi-fi, so set as metered connections.

Anyone know what might've been downloading all that data in the background ?
Furthermore, I have very few things running on each machine - Chrome, Opera, Firefox, all of which I check for updates manually .. and WPS Office which I've prevented from updating automatically. The one machine has Outlook for GMail.

*** = unless there are apps in the BIOS of each machine downloading things out of my control ?

I can only guess that Microsoft are pushing things out in prep. for this next build coming up in a few months time, without people even knowing it's going on in the background .. as it's not going through the normal Update channel we're all used to.

Check to see if there's store apps that updated.

EDIT: Next build only coming out March. Most probably at the end of March aswell.

Yip, yip...

I love Windows 7, then 8.1. 10? Not so much....

My main complaint with 10 is resized windows just don't seem to want to stay where I've left them and at the size I left them at. With my multi monitor setup, every app and program I use has a specifically chosen piece of screen real estate. Windows 10 just doesn't seem capable of honouring the arrangement!!
