Mark Shuttleworth “disgusted with the hate”

Anyone care to provide a tl;dr explanation of what Mir is and what the burning issue is here? Can't say I have a clue, and the article doesn't really explain much.

This sounds like pretty much like what would happen if facebook said. "Our software is free, but we can use your pictures any way we like".

Obviously, after Mr Shuttleworth made his R600 mil, he will now be promoting "open source" and "free software"

Jip. This is how I read it as well. So Mark, it not a case of people hating free software, it is a case of people hating companies who steal other peoples work.
It's not stealing.

You seem very confused.

Mir's problem was that the Ubuntu foundation could never quite justify its existence. They claimed that Wayland did not provide the features they needed, but were vague about what was required. It looks like a combination of Not Invented Here syndrome and wanting more control over the display server than would be possible with Wayland.

So, years later, and they decide to retire Unity, and that means Mir will most probably get the can too. There won't be any Mir clients. What a waste of effort!

That being said, open source people can be incredibly touchy. They have very strong opinions about everything.

He skirted around the real issue quite nicely.
No one was throwing hate at free software, they were upset that he could take the work they had done for free and then license it as he saw fit.

And to think I called the demise of upstart (vs systemd), mir (vs wayland) & unity on the ubuntu forums back in 2013 already, told ya so :D

Shuttleworth (SABDFL), supporters remind me a lot of present day zuma supporters, justify & defend the benevolent dictator for life...

Wtf is a display server?

Takes the window output information from all the apps and generates the output for a screen - including all the fancy features from the user side (switching windows etc) as well as the screen side (3D rendering etc).
