How to setup the HUAWEI B315s-936 on a LAN?

I recently signed up for a LTE deal from Telkom and received the Huawei B315s-936 LTE router.

At home, my network is managed by a Mikrotik router, which also runs my Wifi. I have a combination of wired and wireless connections to the Mikrotik router.

I now want to add LTE to the network by running a cable from one of the ports on my Mikrotik to the LTE router.

However, nothing I do seems to work. It's as if the LTE router cannot be assigned a LAN IP, I'm completely stumped.
The ethernet settings have some confusing option, related to PPPoE, Dynamic IP's, Static IP, LAN Only etc. but the more I play with this, the more it seems that all the ethernet settings are WAN related and not at all LAN related.

If I setup a static IP on the device, I am unable to ping/access it on that IP via the ethernet.

Here is what I'm trying (and failing) to achieve:

My ethernet setup on the LTE router is as follows:
4G Eth.PNG
(With this setup, I am unable to ping/access the 192.168.2.252 address from the Mikrotik or any networked PC)

There are additional "connection modes" (that I honestly don't understand in context of "ethernet")

There are 4 Ethernet ports and one port that doubles as a WAN port. Clearly this router must be LAN capable, but I'm not 100% sure which port to use for my scenario. The only port that, when plugged in, registers "connected" on the "Ethernet Status" page is the LAN4/WAN port.

I am fairly well versed in Mikrotik setup, so I doubt (but haven't ruled out) that the problem could be there.

Anyone else trying to use this modem on a LAN that may be able to lend a hand?

So it turns out the "WLAN IP Address" also doubles as the LAN IP Address, eventhough it's located under the WLAN settings.

Nice HUAWEI :wtf:
Now I look like an idiot.

Anyway, just in case anyone else has this question, the setup to make this work is as follows:

needless to say, you don't need a Mikrotik router for this setup. You will need to do something similar with non-wifi devices e.g. Desktop Media Servers etc.

Thanks for the share. Helped me configure my Asus RT-N66U running TomatoUSB and hooking up the Huawei via the WAN port. Works great.

If only I could get MultiWAN working - life would be complete...

Hi Matthysdt,

This also helped me get mine working, as I have exactly the same network layout as you :) Thanks!!!

Now does anybody know how I can also share the Wi-Fi with the rest of my network?
All my other Wi-Fi devices gets their IP's from the Mikrotik router.

Greetings

Is it possible to set a custom LAN IP on the HUAWEI B315 to a 10.x.x.x IP range please?

m

Yes, you'll have to set it under WLAN > DHCP > from there you will be able to set the LAN IP of the router. It's a strange way of doing things :wtf:

See the 2nd image of the OP's second post. Here is mine as proof it can be done :)

Thank you very much matthysdt. You saved me a lot of time! I can only say I am baffled by the weird way Huawei have arranged their setup. I also have a huawei b593s and the setup on that seems quite logical.

Hi, thanks so much for all the trouble to post this. I think I have the same setup. Also using a Mikrotik router.
Everything was (is) working fine with my setup with my ADSL modem but now that I have the Huawei LTE router on the network (and thanks to your settings I can actually access it) it's not working.

The LTE router seems to be online (says "connected") but I can't access the internet.
Is there something I should do on my Mikrotik router to make it connect to the Huawei? On the quick setup secreen it now shows nothing in the "internet" tab. (it's set to auto and when I switch on my ADSL modem it detects it there and populates the IP, subnet mask and gateway accordingly... but doesn't seem to pick ip the LTE... even after a few reboots)

Any help would be greatly appreciated since WebAfrica doesn't pick up their phones neither responds to the emails I sent :(

Mikrotik is probably dialing PPPoE. You can't set Huawei in bridge mode. It works as a router. Set Mikrotik WAN port in DHCP mode, it should pick up IP address and default gateway from Huawei. This is the way Internet can start flowing.

BTW, Don't use Huawei Port 4 (LAN/WAN) for the connection with Mikrotik, it will complicate things.

Hello I have the exact same setup at my place, but I have a Asus router. Want to use the WAN port on the asus router. If I follow the steps above, my Asus router say its not getting IP from ISP?

Did you disable the dhcp server on the Huawei? If so, then it's not assigning an IP to the ASUS, and you must manually assign a static IP to the ASUS yourself

Good Afternoon i need help setting up my b525 huawei router. I have hidden my network and created WLAN mac filters (which seems to have worked and is connected and surfing) but my biggest issue is creating a LAN filtering that will connect my Playstaion 4. It does not seem to get internet connection with the connected LAN cable and the settings I Put in the router for it. Please Help i have no IT expertise or expertise i am a chance taker to say the least

great share. trying to do the same with my setup. (linksys and huawei) Got mine working but as a double nat (network within a network)
Will be trying this tonight :-)

My problem is slightly different, I can't use the fourth LAN/WAN port on my Huawei B315 router. I don't have any other routers or switches on the network, just my desktop PC, my mediaplayer and my Xbox. When I plug in the fourth cable, the router freaks out and drops the LTE connection as well as the LAN connection to the other devices. The other end of the cable is plugged into my laptop, so my understanding is it should automatically switch to LAN mode? I tried swapping around the device, but same issue. Google and the manual is not much help.
